In this #WorldWaterWeek it's crucial to recognise the immense value of river basins, which provide essential freshwater, support biodiversity, and drive economic activity. Yet, writes Patricia Calderon, head of water at CDP, many are under severe threat due to increased demand, pollution and climate change. CDP's analysis of 2023 data reveals that $105 billion is at risk across 10 global river basins, including the Yangtze, Mississippi, Rhine and Godavari. As CDP data shows, companies in heavy industries are beginning to understand the risks, with 209 firms acknowledging that river basin challenges could impact over 80% of their global revenue. According to World Resources Institute Europe, 25 countries face extremely high water stress, affecting over 50% of the world's population. The call to action is clear during World Water Week: value water appropriately. UMC, The Coca-Cola Company and L'Oréal are investing in water conservation, demonstrating that the cost of action is far less than the potential financial risks. #WaterCrisis #Sustainability #RiverBasins #WaterRisk #ClimateChange #CDP #WRI #WaterConservation #GlobalRisk #EnvironmentalImpact #CorporateResponsibility #UMC #CocaCola #LOréal https://lnkd.in/dv2n_Wmw

The food system is increasingly at risk due to climate change impacts while also being a significant contributor to emissions, particularly methane, writes Mike Scott. The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford flagged this over a decade ago, warning of stranded assets in agriculture. Isobel Rosen from FAIRR Initiative highlights that physical risks like droughts and heatwaves, coupled with transition risks, make the landscape complex for both companies and investors. Peter Elwin at Planet Tracker emphasizes that most investments target the food giants but leave farmers behind. Nusa Urbancic from Changing Markets Foundation points out the urgency, as climate impacts push commodity prices to new heights while Ramya Ravishankar of HowGood stresses the need for companies to measure and communicate environmental impacts, or face market risks. Mars Wrigley is leading by example with its Cocoa for Generations strategy. Barry Parkin, chief sustainability offers at Mars, underscores the importance of adapting to changing climates and sourcing practices. The Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Agribusiness Task Force, including McCain Foods, McDonald's, Mondelēz International, PepsiCo, and @Waitrose, has launched a blended finance framework to support regenerative agriculture. #ClimateChange #FoodSystem #Sustainability #FAIRR #OxfordUniversity #PlanetTracker #Mars #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeFarming #EnvironmentalImpact #Agribusiness #Investment #FoodSecurity #CocoaforGenerations #AgribusinessTaskForce Terry Slavin Liam Dowd https://lnkd.in/eeWYNZPN

The surge in the price of cocoa beans to an unprecedented $10,000 per tonne earlier this year highlights the challenges faced by cocoa farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast, which produce around 60% of the world’s cocoa. Catherine Early reports on how extreme weather, underinvestment and poor yields are leading to low farmer incomes, which drive deforestation and child labour, and speaks to companies like Tony's Chocolonely, which is stepping up with innovative initiatives to promote sustainable cocoa production. Its open-chain model is gaining traction, with companies like Waitrose & Partners and Lidl GB joining the initiative. Nestlé, meanwhile, has partnered with Rainforest Alliance to develop its Income Accelerator programme, which is incentivising sustainable practices and promoting gender equality. As Michael Gidney of the The Fairtrade Foundation tells Early, partnerships and collaboration between companies are key to achieving landscape and systems change. Comment: Two years in, the Inflation Reduction Act is uniting America and driving clean energy growth. Last week marked the second anniversary of President Biden signing the IRA into law, the largest legislation ever passed to confront climate change. The IRA's passage along partisan lines made it vulnerable to political attacks, yet as it has taken hold, it has gained unexpected support, even from some Republican members of Congress. The shift, says Anne L. Kelly of Ceres, Inc., is because the IRA is delivering on its promise to tie climate action to U.S. economic development and industrial policy, with a momentum that is undeniable. #InflationReductionAct #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #USManufacturing #EconomicGrowth #BipartisanSupport #GreenJobs #EnergySecurity #EnvironmentalPolicy Terry Slavin Liam Dowd Ed Long https://lnkd.in/eeUjnT3B
