As per World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2023, informal work pushes women into unregulated roles with poor working conditions more frequently than men. Four out of every five jobs created for women are in the informal economy while, for men, the rate is two out of every three jobs. These women often continue to work in precarious conditions and have limited awareness of their rights and entitlements. For example, many informal economy women workers in India are unaware of the eShram portal, a national database for unorganised workers which links them with several welfare schemes. Even those who are aware of the portal often struggle to access and utilise the benefits of these schemes (Source: BehanBox). Economic independence for these women shall be realised when they can access entitlements to lead dignified lives. Let us envision and work together to create a more supportive environment for informal economy women workers - where they can work with safety and respect, earn fair wages, access welfare benefits, and have peace of mind. Today, on National Handloom Day, we spotlight the resilience and craftsmanship of the women artisans in Phulia, West Bengal. Despite the challenges posed by power looms, these artisans, with the support of SEWA Bharat, continue to preserve the traditional art of handloom weaving. Having already empowered 1,500 women weavers, we hope to continue providing them with the skills, market access, and the support needed to sustain their livelihoods and protect this invaluable cultural heritage. We believe that empowering these artisans can only be done by preserving traditional handloom techniques and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
