The second project highlight from August 'Practice of the Month' New-works This is Low Line Arches The Low Line is a network of creative and cultural nodes that follows the Victorian railway viaducts running through Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey. Our Low Line arches retrofit concept brings redundant railway arches back into use to the benefit of the surrounding communities and small businesses. Our design explores the powerful sense of ‘remaining space’ under the Victorian viaducts. The project creates discrete spaces-within-spaces by placing prefabricated galvanised steel Nissen sheds of differing sizes in the volumes under the arches. They are demountable and transferable, cost-efficient and recyclable. The prefabricated galvanised steel Nissen sheds have now been installed in two Bankside arches, as a cost effective alternative to filling the envelope of the arch with a fit-out with no loss of usable space. The adapted spaces are able to accommodate workspaces, meeting rooms, catering or washrooms, or be left as voids to host a variety of uses, including performing and visual arts. They have already undergone changes in use, attesting to the flexibility of the design. Image 1 name and credit: Ewer Street Low Line arches – Proposed axonometric. A message from RIBA President Muyiwa Oki PRIBA – this week’s news ⬇️ “I am deeply disturbed to see this week’s reports of violence and hatred in communities across the UK. I know this directly impacts many of our members and the teams you work with, alongside friends and family. Racist abuse, intimidation and violence are corrosive to our society and our wellbeing, and present an irrational obstacle to building a society where all are afforded opportunity and dignity. While we still have a way to go to increase representation in architecture, the wealth of diversity in the UK’s cultural industries is what makes it one of the most celebrated in the world, and provides the skills and perspectives we need to address the big societal challenges only architecture can. We’re proud and thankful for the increasingly multi-ethnic and diverse profession of architecture and the teams you work with.”

Today, we are pleased to reveal the first project highlight from August's 'Practice of the Month' New-works This is Great Suffolk Yard Great Suffolk Yard is a 7,623m2 retrofit and new build commercial development in the Liberty of the Mint Conservation Area in Borough. The project reinstates the warehouse and yard typology that characterises the area. Three existing buildings and four new buildings enclose a central yard to create a thriving new multi-aspect workspace peppered with terraces. Whereas other schemes for the site had sought to demolish the existing fabric on the site, our scheme embraced the canyon-like yards typical of the area and reinstated this typology. The yard condition allowed us to create a unique workplace focused on wellbeing, outdoor terraces, cross ventilation, and multi-aspect spaces. The proposals were developed by splitting the plot into key massing elements and rebuilding it holistically. The result is a sense of spatial generosity, vistas and connectedness that unifies the buildings. "Good, high-quality design is important; it helps you live a better life", says RIBA President Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, in an exclusive interview with The Guardian about the Government's proposed planning reforms. “When you have high quality, it considers context, community, layout, as well as things like space, form, light etc – things and attributes that can bring out the best possible outcomes for the local community, for people and society at large.” Although he saw opportunity in the plans to make it easier to build on the green belt, Oki said we “need to think where to site [estates] and is it appropriate in that location”. This included engaging with the local community and ensuring their needs were served, such as access to transport and green space. “It’s my view that the term ‘beauty’ doesn’t really speak to those measures.” ➡️ Read the full interview: https://ow.ly/8HbG50SQcBQ #architecture #placemaking
