Refresh » Repurpose » Reimagine Over 80% of the buildings that will be standing by 2050 have already been built, so we need to focus on retrofitting these existing structures if we’re to achieve net zero by the same year. Having worked on various scales of retrofit across multiple sectors, we know there are no cookie-cutter solutions. Therefore, we categorise the scope of works required for any given project using our sliding scale of intervention. In part 1 of our three-part retrofit blog series, Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall outlines our approach to retrofit by revisiting some of our favourite case studies: https://lnkd.in/etFFTcNP #retrofit #makeneutral #sustainabledesign #makearchitects

20 and 22 Ropemaker Street demonstrates the value of collaborative and forward-thinking design; the culmination of an eight-year journey with Old Park Lane Management, CO-RE London and Skanska to deliver a Grade A workplace prioritising legacy, wellbeing and sustainability. Hear from project lead Frank Filskow on the challenges and opportunities that came with designing a building for the future below. #FourwithCORE #20and22ropemaker #tallbuildings #makearchitects
Standing 25 storeys high in the City of London, Ropemaker was completed in 2024. It’s thought to be one of the tallest stone-clad constructions to be created in London since St Paul’s Cathedral was built in 1675. We spoke to Frank Filskow partner at Make Architects about how he worked with CO-RE and Old Park Lane Management to create Ropemaker. A building that focuses on prioritising the wellbeing of its occupiers, Frank explains how this has been achieved, including achieving a BREEAM 2018 ‘Outstanding’ rating. We are delighted to confirm that Skanska and McGee have achieved completion of the basement excavation, and ‘bottoming out’ of our latest development in Westminster, 7 Millbank, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress. This means we can commence the sub and super structure works in the coming months, with completion set for Q1 2027. This is a result of the exceptional commitment and collaboration of our delivery partners, including Skanska, McGee, Gardiner & Theobald LLP, Make Architects, Waterman Group, Hilson Moran and the wider project team. The redevelopment is a continuation of OPLM’s vision to create high quality, sustainable and flexible workspaces, with the emphasis of the design being on wellness and occupier experience. As we look forward to the next significant milestone on the project, thank you to everyone involved.

Artiq is a London-based international art agency curating and delivering bespoke art collections that create impact with culture. But how can this impact be measured? In a guest blog for Make, Artiq’s lead art consultant Meela Thurloway explores concepts of value associated with investing in art that goes beyond ownership. She suggests that renting art, as opposed to buying it, may offer new avenues for enhancing social value and addressing environmental concerns. 🔗Read more: https://lnkd.in/gkf7a8ue (Image captions L-R) ✦ Circulatio by Georgie Mason Studio, installed at 31 St James’s Square; architectural design by Make ✦ Birth of Pandora by Suzi Morris, leased and installed at EQT London ✦ Multiple Plays by Zdenek Konvalina, leased and installed at MM:NT Berlin Lab #socialimpact #socialvalue #art #culture #artiq #makearchitects
