The title ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ (RDI) is awarded annually by the RSA to designers of all disciplines who have achieved ‘sustained design excellence, work of aesthetic value and significant benefit to society’. The RDI is the highest accolade for designers in the UK. Only 200 designers can hold the title. Non-UK designers may become honorary Royal Designers. The ‘Royal Designers’ are responsible for designing the world around us, enriching our cultural heritage, driving innovation, inspiring creativity in others and improving our quality of life. The jet engine, Routemaster bus, iPhone, and Harry Potter film sets, among thousands of objects and experiences that have been created by them. Since it was introduced, recipients of the honour have included designers as diverse as Barnes Wallis, Lucienne Day, Jonathan Ive, Thomas Heatherwick and Es Devlin. The Royal Designers contribute to the RSA in numerous ways, sharing their skills and experience with the organisation, its staff and networks, in particular supporting design education through the RSA Student Design Awards, and the RSA Family of Academies. Our mission is to inspire new generations of creative thinkers to design a better world. The Association of Royal Designers for Industry brings together leading figures from all fields of design: the people behind the products, services, places, experiences, fashions, brands, typefaces and many other things that are the stuff of everyday life. We exist to support and champion design in all its forms, to help shape a better world and enrich lives at every level. We also seek to provide an authoritative voice within the design industry and design education on a wide range of social and environmental issues with the view to inspiring and informing new generations of creative thinkers.

Design is everywhere, shaping the world we live in. From Carnival arts to Landscape design, from Film to Cities, the work of this year’s RDIs reminds us how deeply design influences every interaction with the human-made world. The Royal Designers for Industry will be announced tonight at The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) as we celebrate seven visionary designers shaping the future of our world through their work!
Earlier this month, The Nobel Prize 2024 in chemistry was awarded to Sir Demis Hassabis RDI, cofounder and CEO of Google DeepMind. Demis shares the Nobel with his colleague John Jumper for developing an AI model that solved a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. The award is also shared with US biochemist David Baker for his computational protein design. Together these discoveries hold enormous potential and widespread implications across science and medicine. In 2021, Demis was awarded the title RDI for his contribution to the development of artificial intelligence including the co-creation of Google’s ‘Deep Mind’, one of the world’s first and most powerful AI’s. His introduction mentioned AlphaFold, the model that has since been used to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified, leading to the recent Nobel Prize. Since the breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic. Demis is now working with his team to develop drugs to fight cancer and Alzheimer’s, and in the future he aims to use AI to model the climate more accurately. “When we look back in 10 years, I hope [AI] will have heralded a new golden era of scientific discovery,” he told the Financial Times. “That’s what got me into AI in the first place. I see it as the ultimate tool in accelerating scientific research.”
Emotional spoons, creative portals, human networks The Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry was delighted that 40 early-career designers, scientists and engineers and 12 "Wildcards" (people whose life intersects ours in some way) joined RDIs at the beautiful Dartington Hall in Devon over the weekend of September 27th for the second of the current series of Sessions. The full complement of 60 souls provided a chance for cross-inspiration, reflection and activity as we shared experience and searched for insight. This year's theme was "Mend, Do and Make". How can a kinship of design, science and thought can help mend our world through ingenuity and empathy? The Session took its unique shape when we came together as this year’s cohort. It was open-started, open-ended and open-hearted. There was no expectation of a particular outcome (though past participants have remarked on the Session’s profound and lasting effects). The Session weekend gave everyone the opportunity to pause for thought, to enjoy a shared experience with like-minded people across generations, backgrounds and cultures. It was an opportunity for all of us there to think, to play, to talk, to laugh and to perform - extending the the long tradition of Dartington Hall as a place of creativity and the unexpected. With genuine thanks to the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 for supporting Summer Session '24. This week designers from the RDI Faculty and wider community are exhibiting at London Design Festival. Kim Colin RDI and sam hecht RDI are showing a conceptual design from their studio Future Facility (with Leo Leitner) that explores the relationship between the digital and physical worlds at ‘Design You Can Feel’ at Protein Studios, 31 New Inn Yard, EC2 3EY. Luke Pearson RDI and Tom Lloyd RDI (Pearson Lloyd) are exploring what ‘well made’ means today in an exhibition of 60 diverse responses from across the industry at Yorkton Workshops, E2 8NH. Michael Marriott RDI is launching the ‘Sori Yanagi Appreciation Society’ in collaboration with writer Duncan Riches at Tokyobike in Shoreditch. The show includes a specially composed presentation of Sori Yanagi designs, along with the launch of the Sori Yanagi Appreciation Book, published by Rollo Press at tokyobike, 87-89 Tabernacle Street, EC2A 4BA. Marina Willer RDI is presenting ‘Overlooked’, a celebration of London’s drain covers, highlighting their intricate designs and craftsmanship, often overlooked due to their industrial function. The show features prints by Dan Mather on Fedrigoni paper at Unit 210, Borough Yards, SE1 9AD. And Summer Session 2023 alumni Andu Masebo is presenting ‘Making room’ with Mikey Krzyzanowski, a series of workshops, talks and happenings to make room for collaborative experiences and new ways of thinking. It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of Sir Kenneth Grange, for five decades, a distinguished member and dear friend of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry. From the Anglepoise Lamp, the Intercity 125 and London taxi, Kenneth's industrial design left an indelible mark on the fabric of late twentieth century Britain. With a twinkle in his eye, Kenneth was both plain speaking and mischievous, and encouraged countless designers through their own professional journeys. His creative instincts never wained. We extend our deepest condolences to Sir Kenneth's wife Apryl and family. His passing is a tremendous loss to the design community, but his spirit and contributions will endure, inspiring us all to strive for brilliance in our craft. Sir Kenneth Grange will be greatly missed.
