Publica is an urban design and public realm practice, bringing research and intelligence to the process of urban change.
About us
Publica specialises in strategies and design for public space, urban design and masterplanning. We provide comprehensive advice to major landowners, developers, local authorities, architects, and community organisations. We work across all scales from single streets and spaces to masterplans and area strategies. We believe that the quality of the public realm, and the built form that frames it, is defined not only by its spatial and physical characteristics, but also by social and cultural conditions. Publica’s work is based upon rigorous local area research and analysis, used to produce evidence-based innovative proposals. We produce district-wide urban design visions and propose key civic projects for planning authorities, Business Improvement Districts and major landowners. We completed a major City of London spatial strategy for the Barbican and Golden Lane area and were additionally appointed to work with their major cultural institutions to develop a vision for the City’s new Cultural Hub. Our vision and strategy for the Northbank, from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych, sets out bold proposals for the future of the area’s streets and public spaces. We create principle-led design briefs and proposals for public spaces. Of the six major transformational projects in London’s West End, Publica is leading or working on five. We have re-designed some of London’s most important civic spaces – restoring Hanover Square, Marylebone Lane and Bond Street – to enhance their character and celebrating their heritage.

Publica CIC, through its Campaign for Inclusive Cities, with The Crown Estate, UCL Urban Laboratory and Collective Architecture, are leading a national conversation focused on improving the safety of women, girls and non-binary people in the public realm. Over the past 5 years, concerted action has been made nationwide to raise awareness of the role the built environment sector plays in addressing inequality in our urban landscape. In the first meeting, a collaborative discussion will be held about the possibilities for a national network on gender inclusive public space. We aim to build a community of people already committed to advancing this work. Together, we can create safer, more inclusive, and empowering spaces, and drive nationwide change. --- #Publica #PublicaCIC #InclusiveCities #UrbanDesign #NationalChange Ellie Cosgrave

Since September 2024, Publica's Senior Urban Designer, Tess McCann, Graphic Designer, Greer Lockyear, and urban design professor, Bahar Durmaz-Drinkwater, have catalogued the locations and historic details of almost 700 heritage assets in a heritage audit for The Soho Neighbourhood Forum. The results of the audit are now complete and accessible to the public through an online interactive map. Additionally, a database of intangible heritage assets, compiled using records from The London Archives is available to view online. With thanks to the collective work from the Soho community, the heritage audit will help ensure Soho’s historic built fabric can be celebrated for years to come. I have some news! After nearly eight years at City Bridge Foundation, I am leaving to join Publica as a Director. Publica is a research and urban design practice that works at a variety of scales, from the detailed design of a single street to setting the vision and strategy for an entire district. In my new role, I will be part of Publica's mission to make cities more efficient, inclusive, vibrant and safe. I'll also be supporting the work of Publica CIC, led by the amazing Ellie Cosgrave. Working at City Bridge Foundation has been an incredible privilege. I can't think of many other places of work that give you the opportunity to engage with such a diverse range of communities, have a hand in the distribution of millions of pounds and serve as custodian of the world-famous cultural icon that is Tower Bridge. I came into the role knowing very little about the world of Trusts & Foundations and grant-making and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to learn in such a supportive environment, surrounded by incredible people. After nearly eight years, the people at City Bridge Foundation don't just feel like colleagues, they feel like family - so leaving was a really difficult decision to make. However, the opportunity to join Publica and support their research and urban design work was a role that I knew I had to take. I've known of and advocated for the incredible work that Publica does ever since I was appointed as a Mayor's Design Advocate a few years ago. I'll be joining an incredible team of specialists in urban design, planning, policy, research, graphic design and communications. So, yes, I fully expect to suffer from imposter syndrome for some time! Though, having met the team and knowing the warm and inclusive culture that Lucy Musgrave OBE RDI Hon FRIBA has built at Publica, I'm sure I won't feel that way for too long. As I make this new move, please feel free to re-connect or reach out for the first time. Send me a message if you want to talk about urban design, working with communities or just chat over a coffee!

Publica is excited to be working with the London Borough of Hackney for the Shoreditch Public Realm and Urban Greening Framework. Together with transport planners Velocity we will develop a masterplan identifying several strategic sites for public realm improvements across the Southern area of LB Hackney. The project, which started in February, aims to make the area a more welcoming, safer and greener space for all. We look forward to continuing to work with LB Hackney and Velocity to achieve this vision. --- #Publica #UrbanDesign #Masterplan #LBHackney #Shoreditch #PublicRealm

Publica recently spoke with Architecture Today about our approach to developing transformative public spaces and the CIC’s Campaign for Inclusive Cities. We explored the CIC’s international initiative addressing gender-based violence in collaboration with CHANGE (City Hub and Network for Gender Equity) in Louisville, Bogotá and Stockholm. A huge thank you to Nelly Greig from Architecture Today for a brilliant discussion on the importance of creating a safer, joyful and participatory public realm for all.
