Yesterday in Glasgow, SafetyOn held a Safe by Design workshop to examine and explore innovative approaches to the design and implementation of effective strategies for preventing slips, trips, and falls in the onshore wind industry. The objective of the Safe by Design workshop was to identify potential hazards and opportunities to design out hazards and minimise risks. The proceedings from the workshop and recommendations for the industry will be published in a report by Q4 2025 and will be freely available on the SafetyOn website. Thank you to our speaker Frank Monaghan, facilitators Worley and all the attendees for their valuable contributions and input to the workshop, showing the sectors commitment to improving safety.

About us
SafetyOn is the health and safety organisation for the onshore wind sector. Providing a voice for the dynamic and innovative onshore wind industry, we ensure transparency about the industry’s health and safety performance, as well as assisting industry stakeholders to see that key emerging risks are mitigated through co-operation and shared learnings. We work to provide health and safety leadership across the onshore wind sector, monitor and gather data on the health and safety performance of the sector and share knowledge and good practice with industry stakeholders. Working through the Energy Institute we will establish an open network of safety and health experts, professionals and stakeholders to promote a strong, sustainable and continually improving health and safety culture.

📢 New publication! EI 3583 Medical fitness assessment for wind turbine workers The Energy Institute's Health Technical Committee has just published a guidance document that provides a framework to assist in undertaking the medical fitness assessment for personnel working in the wind energy sector. It has been developed by experienced clinicians, working and undertaking regular medical assessments in the onshore and offshore wind industry, and it incorporates lessons learned from the wider offshore energy industry. It will be delivered in partnership with medical fitness certification providers, including Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) and Element NL. This guidance document provides a consistent, industry-aligned approach to medical fitness evaluations, processes, terminology, and the interpretation of results. By doing so, it enables contractors and workers to transition seamlessly across providers through a fair and standardised assessment system. (Note: the guidance document relates to medical fitness assessments and not statutory health surveillance.) The guidance is available as a free PDF at the following link (registration required): https://lnkd.in/dZ7BMFye #medicalfitness #fitnessassessment #wind #offshorewind #onshorewind #windenergy #fitnessforwork #renewables

📢 New Publication Alert! SafetyOn and G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation have been working collaboratively with the Energy Institute to enhance safety protocols in the onshore and offshore wind industry through the Safe System of Work (SSOW) workshops. These workshops, attended by industry professionals including electrical engineers, authorising engineers, health, safety and environment (HSE) professionals, and training providers, focused on refining and standardising the WTSRs. The aim was to ensure a consistent and robust approach to safety that could be adopted globally across the wind industry. The report outlines the proceedings and findings from those workshops 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eHgXjv_e

New cross-skilling programme enables a seamless transition between Oil & Gas and Wind sectors for technicians. We’re excited to launch a groundbreaking pilot programme in partnership with Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, enabling skilled Oil & Gas technicians to transition into onshore and offshore wind – and back again when needed. With the UK’s wind capacity needing to double by 2030, the Offshore Wind Industry Council forecasts a shortfall of 4,500+ skilled operations & maintenance roles in the next five years. This programme aims to bridge that gap by equipping technicians with the essential skills and training to work across both sectors. 📣Find out more and how to apply: https://lnkd.in/eVwnMWZs #EngineeringCareers #EnergyTransition #OffshoreWind #SkillsDevelopment #ConnectedCompetence Andrew Hockey

It was fantastic to see the RES UK&I HSQE team and operational leaders out on various sites last week supporting SafetyOn's #StandUpForSafety campaign. I had a great discussion with the team at the RES Asset managed site at Cumberhead Wind farm. It is really important to take the time to reflect on the way we undertake our operations and hear different view points to continuously improve safety.

It was a pleasure to co-host a workshop trialling the SafetyOn and G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation's upcoming Wind Turbine System Safety Rules (WTSSR). Using carefully selected scenarios, we put the WTSSR to the test, identifying minor areas for improvement before its final release. It has been a long journey, with countless hours of work and collaboration going into this, but we are almost there! Having co-authored the WTSSR with Stephen Harrison, it was rewarding to see its robustness in action. A big thanks to everyone for their patience - we know many are looking forward to its release. I am now looking forward to working with Mark Watson and Emma McIvor on the final report, ready for Steering Committee approval in the months ahead.

We are delighted to participate in SafetyOn’s Stand Up for Safety Week which took place from 20 to 24 January. Stand Up for Safety Week is dedicated to creating time to discuss hazard working onshore and preventative measures that can be taken to reduce risks to our health and safety 👷♂️ This year, our Technical Management Services and HSEQ teams organised a workshop focusing on “the power of example”. The objective is to inspire and educate our colleagues on leading by example when it comes to safety practices. Find some highlights of the meeting below. #StandUpForSafety

#standupforsafety This week within #siemensgamesa we have been taking part in the annual Stand Up For Safety campaign through our close relationship with SafetyOn Each morning during our setting to work safety briefings, we viewed a range of content related to leading by example, wearing the correct the PPE, especially hand protection for the variety of tasks undertaken each day on the turbines and also around the topics of recognising, removing and redesigning unsafe tasks/conditions. Great engagement from the team each morning, always motivated and ready to go! Safety isn't something we consider each time an initiative crops up. Safety is at the heart of every task we perform, each and every day. #homesafe #safetyon #ppe #windturbines

Spreading the word on SafetyOn & #StandUpForSafety with the Siemens Gamesa talented Onshore Operations Support team supporting the NE&ME Region as Technical Project Specialists, Operation Readiness Project Managers and Data Analyst. I'm blessed to have a talent from Pakistan, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Poland & UK. It was great to discuss what SafetyOn and Energy Institute is all about and have conversations around safety across the region and 21 countries they support. Making our #OnshoreWind industry wherever that is a safer and healthier environment to work. 🙌
