Last week, we visited manufacturers we have been working with in Portugal to showcase SAGES dyes in action! 🇵🇹 We've been developing our colour range across a range of fabrics and our dyes were successfully replicated on industrial machinery. It’s so inspiring to see the focus on sustainable textile innovation firsthand and we’re now working on scaling up to meet growing demand. Innovating the fashion industry: The world’s first biodegradable leather alternative created using waste avocado pits to give a naturally tanned look. 🥑 The textile industry is responsible for eight to 10% of the world’s carbon emissions, that’s more than international flights and shipping combined. Chemical dyes affect the health of textile workers, causing dermatitis, disorders of the central nervous system and even cancer. Innovate UK is funding a collaborative R&D project between Cranfield University SAGES and Osmose Studio, to develop the world’s first biodegradable leather alternative, protecting workers from harmful chemicals and reducing emissions. SAGES co-founder and Director Emily Jane Taylor said: “By focusing on waste streams, both for the dyes and the coating that’s applied after dyeing, we hope that the end product will form part of fashion’s shift from a linear model to a circular, waste-based one” Osmose Studio CEO and Creative Director Aurélie Fontan explained: “There are two alternatives to animal leather, neither of which are 100% natural. There are those that are purely synthetic, the material is synthetic, the colouring is synthetic. SAGES is proud to have partnered with Patrick McDowell for his most recent collection Portraits of a Painter. Congratulations to Patrick and the team for an amazing show at London Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. We developed specific colours for the collection inspired by Patricks favourite paintings by Glyn Philpot which were dyed in commercial machines with UK dye house partners.
