🌐 A Memorable Visit to Japan: Advancing UK-Japan Collaboration in Science and Technology 🌐 Last month, I had the privilege of visiting Japan, to deliver keynote speeches and engage with the science, technology, and innovation community. One of the highlights was speaking at Japan's prestigious Annual Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum, where I addressed the possible crisis in science diplomacy and also research security, alongside discussions with international science ministers on strengthening global scientific cooperation. My engagements extended to key institutions such as Japan’s leading research funding agencies, NEDO and JST, and it was an honour to meet the comprehensive network of Japan’s Chief Scientific Advisers. These dialogues underscored the shared challenges and immense potential for joint UK-Japan initiatives. At BioJapan, I proudly showcased the UK’s excellence in synthetic biology, a field where we are globally powerful. The interest in the UK's science and technology offerings was palpable, and it was clear that we have fertile ground for expanding bilateral collaboration. The future of robotics also came to life on a visit to Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro's laboratory, a centrepiece of Japan’s Moonshot 2050 Programme. Experiencing ‘Shosa,’ the advanced humanoid robot, was awe-inspiring, and I’m eager to witness its evolution, with 30 ‘Shosas’ set to appear at the Osaka World Expo in 2025. Meeting Toshiba’s Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Yukata Sata was insightful, where we discussed cutting-edge R&D in quantum computing, battery technology, and hydrogen innovation. The trip reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to being a leading partner for Japan in science and technology. The opportunities for collaboration are abundant, and I look forward to building on the relationships and ideas that emerged from this visit. #ScienceAndTechnology #UKJapanPartnership #Innovation #EngineeringBiology #Robotics #GlobalCooperation
