On #ZeroWasteDay, we're proud to share that 77% of all waste collected by our contractor Biffa was diverted from landfill in 2023-24! Additionally, 74% of general waste was either recycled, composted, or used to generate electricity. 🌱⚡ These achievements highlight our commitment to sustainability and protecting our beautiful canals and environment. We look forward to continuing our sustainability efforts to contribute to a greener future. 💚 Olivia Lassiere Daniel Musenga-Grant Net Zero Scotland #Sustainability #NetZero

We're the custodians of Scotland's canals - a vital part of our nation's rich heritage.
About us
Scottish Canals is responsible for the management and development of five canals and their surrounding estates across Scotland. The Forth & Clyde, Union, Monkland, Crinan and Caledonian canals, together extend over 137 miles from coast to coast, across country and into the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness – attracting more than 22 million visitors per year. The network is home to world renowned landmarks The Kelpies and The Falkirk Wheel. Built 200 years ago to fire the Industrial Revolution, today the canals contribute to the Scottish Government agenda of developing a Greener; Healthier; Smarter; Safer and Stronger; and Wealthier and Fairer Scotland. Scottish Canals achieves this by acting as a catalyst for sustainable economic development, regeneration and tourism, as well as contributing to education, biodiversity, heritage and the promotion of active living and healthier lifestyles.

We're embarking on the biggest programme of engineering works on Scotland's canals since the Millennium Link Project re-opened the Lowland network 25 years ago. This year, we're working with Mackenzie Construction to replace 10 lock gates, carry out inspections and repairs, and install a lock bypass on the Falkirk Flight of the Forth & Clyde Canal. If you walk along the route, you'll see that the water levels have been lowered in anticipation of the works. Tomorrow and Thursday, we'll be working with our partners at Forth Rivers Trust on a 'fish rescue' (relocating the fish to other parts of the canal) ahead of full dewatering. Thanks to George McBurnie (our Senior Project Manager working on the project) for this photo. Preview! Our Senior Project Manager George McBurnie visited Harrisons Engineering (Lancashire) Ltd. last week to see how the new lock gates for the Forth & Clyde's Lock 16 (Camelon) are getting on... Our contractors Mackenzie Construction are currently installing a lock bypass at Lock 16. Once complete, they'll move on to the gate replacement. Why are we replacing the gates? The current gates were installed almost 25 years ago under the historic Millennium Link Project, which re-opened our Lowland Canal Network. Because lock gates are subject to immense water pressures, all weathers, wear and tear - they typically do not last beyond a quarter of a century. That's why we're replacing ten lock gates along the #Falkirk Flight of the canal this year. Here's to another 25 years (and beyond!) of the Forth & Clyde Canal, the grandfather of the world's sea-to-sea canals! Alasdair Hamilton Ross Speirs Jonathan Park #canal #waterengineering

We recently had the pleasure of hosting the Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust's dementia-friendly walking group at Lochrin Basin in Edinburgh where we shared updates on our latest improvement projects and enjoyed a lovely walk along the Union Canal. Nick Bowen from RaeburnFarquharBowen Landscape Architecture & Urban Design led a thoughtful discussion on what makes spaces inviting and unique. It was also great to hear insights from local residents, who have a deep connection to the Fountainbridge area. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and knowledge as we continue to enhance this beloved community space.
