200 year old historic wall found at Fountainbridge, Edinburgh 🤩 During landscaping works on the Union Canal, a historic masonry wall was discovered. The wall survived under the modern surface and behind a concrete wall that was built during the 1920’s, and although our research indicated that it may have survived since 1822 when the canal opened, the amount and condition was a pleasant surprise. The sloping masonry suggests that the wall was constructed to protect the canal embankment from the wash of passing boats. Similar examples survive at other locations on the canal. The current concrete quayside wall was built when the two historic basins, Port Hopetoun and Port Hamilton were infilled and the new canal terminus created. The wall is being archaeologically recorded and will be left in situ under the new surfacing for future generations. Scottish natural stone paving will be laid to create a smooth surface to improve accessibility for all users, and new lighting will increase community safety for towpath users and boaters. We're the custodians of Scotland's canals - a vital part of our nation's rich heritage.
About us
Scottish Canals is responsible for the management and development of five canals and their surrounding estates across Scotland. The Forth & Clyde, Union, Monkland, Crinan and Caledonian canals, together extend over 137 miles from coast to coast, across country and into the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness – attracting more than 22 million visitors per year. The network is home to world renowned landmarks The Kelpies and The Falkirk Wheel. Built 200 years ago to fire the Industrial Revolution, today the canals contribute to the Scottish Government agenda of developing a Greener; Healthier; Smarter; Safer and Stronger; and Wealthier and Fairer Scotland. Scottish Canals achieves this by acting as a catalyst for sustainable economic development, regeneration and tourism, as well as contributing to education, biodiversity, heritage and the promotion of active living and healthier lifestyles.

Falkirk Wheel Fish Rescue - no fish left behind! 🐟 The Trust's consultancy branch was in attendance at the Falkirk Wheel last week. As the basin was drained for maintenance work, we conducted a fish rescue over 3 days, relocating approximately 3,723 fish including 2 adult brown trout, 2 adult tench, and a variety of roach, pike, perch, and eels. All fish were relocated safely to the nearby canal, from our biggest, an eel at 770mm and a pike at 480mm, all the way down to a juvenile roach at 34mm. Thank you to Scottish Canals and The Falkirk Wheel and well done to the team who persevered through the mud to rescue, measure and relocate all those fish! Check out some of the photos from our work below, and remember if you’d like to hire the consultancy and our skilled, dedicated team, you can get in touch on enquiries@forthriversconsulting.co.uk to find out more about the services we can offer. #FishRescue #FreshwaterConservation #ForthRiversConsulting #FalkirkWheel #ScottishCanals #AnnualMaintenance #LoveYourLocalRiver

The Towpath project in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh has started on site, delivered by Scottish Canals and Sustrans. This project will improve the Union Canal towpath between Leamington Lift Bridge and Edinburgh Quay by upgrading the surfacing, adding lighting and increasing service amenities for those using the canal. These works, constructed by Mackenzie Construction, will both functionally and visually enhance the experience for active travel along the towpath. Together with the New Fountainbridge development it will make for a renewed, high quality urban quarter for the growing community.
