  • Things are hotting up underground when it comes to clean heat in Scotland ♨️ Did you know there are various projects underway exploring the potential of the ground beneath our feet as a reliable source of heat and energy storage? Water in abandoned mines can often sit at temperatures between 10-25c. Heat pumps can be used to extract this heat and boost temperatures, with the hot water then circulated to properties and another loop returning the water to its source, where it is reheated and the cycle repeats. Disused mine workings in the Midland Valley could potentially provide 40% of heating needed in Glasgow - or 8% of total demand across Scotland. There is also huge potential for these flooded mines to store thermal energy generated through wind turbines, which would otherwise go to waste when they reach peak generation capacity and have to be turned off. And the next time you're busting a move on the dance floor, think about how all of that energy could be used for good 💃 Scottish geothermal start-up TownRock Energy is responsible for the innovative BODYHEAT system - a project which stores heat from dancers at Glasgow’s SWG3 venue in 12 U-shaped boreholes located 200 metres underground. The heat from the dance floor is extracted by renewable-powered heat pumps and stored. The system then uses the heat to warm or cool the building to the desired temperature.
