Seastex
Textile Manufacturing
Seastex Ltd is committed to mitigating the environmental impact of the mussel industry.
About us
In April 2021, an eye-opening waste opportunity within the mussel industry came to light. The mussel industry plays a significant role in the generation of byssus fibers, which are combined with live mussel waste and processed alongside other animal by-products in an energy recovery process or disposed of in landfills. Both these practices contribute to the generation of methane gas, a greenhouse gas that is more than 25 times as potent as CO2 in trapping heat in the atmosphere. Recognizing the importance of tackling climate change, Seastex Ltd was founded in June 2021 with the aim of joining the carbon removal revolution. Through innovative solutions and sustainable practices, Seastex Ltd is committed to mitigating the environmental impact of the mussel industry and actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Great to be part of the WBC community, were we are working towards a greener construction and aquaculture industry in Scotland. 🌍🏴♻️
This #TenantTuesday we welcome sustainable materials SME Seastex to our WBC community. The team joined us on the 1st of October, and are settled in and back about their business of tackling the shortage of eco-friendly, safe, and circular materials in the creative industries. Seastex focus on extracting, processing, and transforming mussel beards from aquaculture waste into acoustic and thermal products and they join us with the goal to scale up our innovative clean technologies from lab-scale to industrial-scale by prototyping machinery to commercially process mussel beards. Welcome guys! 💚♻️👋 #SustainableMaterials #EcoInnovation #GreenManufacturing #CircularEconomy #EcoFriendlySolutions #SustainableBusiness #ZeroWasteMaterials #EcoTech #FlexibleWorkspaces #OfficeOnDemand

This month marks the beginning of a new chapter in Seastex's startup journey. As of October 1st, we are moving into a light industrial unit in Glasgow to strengthen our presence in the green building materials sector. Our top priority is the Innovate UK Creative Catalyst programme, where we will focus on developing novel technologies to recycle mussel waste more efficiently than existing fibre processing methods. Wish us luck! #NewBeginnings #Seastex #GreenBuilding #SustainableMaterials #InnovateUK #CreativeCatalyst #RecyclingInnovation #EcoTech #MusselWasteRecycling #CleanTech #StartupJourney #CircularEconomy #EnvironmentalInnovation #Musselbeards #Glasgow

We’re honoured to have our Acoustic Byssus Core (ABC) tiles longlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2024! Out of 4130 entries, our project is one of 81 sustainability projects that are in the running to win an award later this year in the sustainability categories. Thank you, Dezeen, and best of luck to all the nominated projects! #dezeenawards #seastex #musselbeards #circular #safe #sustainable #London https://lnkd.in/e5x4wkZa

Seastex was informed that it won the Innovate UK Creative Catalyst 2024 competition and secured a grant. Its funding, starting in October, will support the development of innovative processing technologies to efficiently recycle mussel beard waste into circular products. Conventional technologies face challenges as they are incompatible with novel fibres, often destroying them and leaving only 50% usable. The remaining material is then mixed with petroleum-based or PLA substances to produce so called “sustainable composites.” At Seastex, we are shifting away from these composites because they are ultimately destined for incineration or landfill, causing to continue the very issues we aim to address. Our new technology eliminates the need for binders in our mussel beard panels, ensuring they remain circular, biodegradable, and naturally flame retardant. #Seastex #Musselbeards #Seatextiles #Circularity #Sustainability #Safety #Construction #Architecture #Interior #Engineering #InnovateUK #Creativecatalyst2024 #Sustainabledevelopmentgoals #Unitedkingdom

We’re featured in the latest issue of Mix Interiors ! Page 137 🌱🌍💚
The latest issue of Mix Interiors is out now, highlighting pioneering, risk-taking design and fresh new concepts. Inside issue 232 we speak to WeWantMore ’s Ruud Belmans, whose work with McDonald's imagines a world in which circular design is made fit for the masses, and BradyWilliams co-founder Shayne Brady, who has felt the benefit of taking chances – in life as well as work. A host of inspirational project case studies also highlights the bold and visionary. We return to M Moser Associates’ ‘testbed’ living lab in Paris to explore lessons learnt, stay at Edinburgh’s vibrant W Hotel designed by Jestico + Whiles, and tour the SODA Studio-designed co-living space, where a former 70s office block has been boldly repurposed. In London, we visit Hawkins\Brown's recently unveiled HQ and check-in to The Emory, where multiple interiors heavyweights have devised a variety of spaces under one roof. Elsewhere, we feature two, future-facing Mix Roundtables: on designing spaces for the next generation with modulyss, and asking if modularity could deliver more sustainable, future-proofed environments with Specialist Group - Joinery | Glass | Metal . Plus, we sit down with cutting-edge material designer Jonas Edvard to discuss his work and vision for the future of material science, reflect on our highlights from a busy season of design festivals and hear the latest insights from our regular expert columnists. Subscribe to get your copy or read online: https://lnkd.in/dMAfuWg Thank you to M Moser and Bisley Furniture for this issue’s trailblazing cover which translates occupancy data collected from M Moser’s Paris living lab into a generative 3D art piece – using Bisley’s newly introduced colour options.
