The Selwyn College Boat Club has successfully completed their 24-hour Ergathon event, doubling their 300km target with a total distance of 702km on the erg. Thanks to the students' dedication and generosity of fellows, alumni, family and friends, they have raised £9700 towards the purchase of a new women’s four and men’s pair, which is just short of their £10,000 goal. They would appreciate any extra donations in the final days of fundraising to make up this £300. You can support them using the donate button on this page: https://lnkd.in/ePBar8EB
About us
Selwyn College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The college was founded by the Selwyn Memorial Committee in memory of George Augustus Selwyn (1809–1878), the first Bishop of New Zealand (1841–1868), and subsequently Bishop of Lichfield (1868–1878). It consists of three main courts built of brick and stone (Old Court, Cripps Court and Ann's Court) with some ancillary buildings, including houses serving as student hostels on Grange Road, West Road and Sidgwick Avenue. It received its Royal Charter in 1882 from Queen Victoria.

The college is thrilled to report that fellow Dr Marta Halina, a member of the Cambridge Department of History & Philosophy of Science, has been awarded a Pilkington Prize. The Pilkington Prize awards were endowed and inaugurated in 1994 by Sir Alastair Pilkington to acknowledge excellence in teaching. The prizes are awarded to individuals who make a substantial contribution to the teaching programme of a Department, Faculty or the University as a whole. The citation reads: Dr Marta Halina has almost single-handedly overhauled our History & Philosophy of Science Tripos to make Cambridge one of the foremost places in the world to study philosophy of cognitive science, comparative cognition and AI. Prior to her arrival, there was no dedicated teaching on these topics: a major gap. Marta developed 48 hours of new lectures and 8 hours of new seminars, including seven entirely new courses. She has also, since long before lockdown and the pivot to remote teaching, been a leader in the use of innovative pedagogical strategies and technologies in the classroom. At the postgraduate level, Marta led a major restructuring of our MPhil as well as changes to the support we offer our postgraduate students. She has introduced a very popular MPhil module, AI in Healthcare, and is in high demand for supervising both MPhil and PhD students. Most importantly, Marta's teaching is always marked by a concern to improve diversity and equality. Through her careful dedication to teaching, she has not only broadened the range of topics we teach and discuss but also who gets to discuss them. Marta's students rightly view her as a role model of how to do philosophy.

And there's a chance to support Selwyn's brilliant rowers here - https://lnkd.in/ee75Zywm. They've already raised an amazing £4,500 and any help towards their target of £10,000 would be really appreciated!
Last week, Cambridge University rowing clubs competed in the annual Lent Bumps! 🚣 The Lent Bumps is a rowing race on the River Cam that takes place over 5 days. The race is about 200 years old and is beloved by students and alumni of many generations. It gets its name from competitors moving ahead by 'bumping' the boat in front where the river is too narrow to compete side by side. If a crew manages to get a bump every day (i.e. go up four places) then they are awarded their oars - a blade painted in their College colours, with their crews’ names and boats they bumped. Have you seen the vintage blades in pubs around Cambridge? Congratulations to everyone who bumped, and commiserations to the bumped! What are your best Bumps memories? Pictured are crews from Trinity Hall, Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, St Catharine's College Cambridge, and Jesus College Cambridge. #CambridgeUniversity

It was indeed a terrific week on the river for the Selwyn College Boat Club. They report: - We are very proud to have won the Marconi cup — the award for the club with the most successful Lent Bumps campaign, calculated by the number of bumps per crew. - W2 won blades, bumping on 4/4 days. - W1 won technical blades, bumping 4 times over 5 days. - M1 went up +3 and M2 maintained at +0. The college congratulates its rowers on this success.

Roger Mosey, master of Selwyn and a former BBC News executive, wrote for the Daily Telegraph about the challenges facing the corporation. (Roger is writing here in a personal capacity.)
An attempt to analyse the challenges facing BBC News. We need impartial, intelligent news more than ever - but the BBC needs to give its journalism more resources and aim for true distinctiveness. Even if that means fewer stories about cats on trains… https://lnkd.in/e5iEWtge

On the 24th-25th March (5pm-5pm), Selwyn College Boat Club is launching a 24-Hour ‘Ergathon’ event to raise money for new equipment. SCBC members will row with at least one, and up to four, ergs in constant use for a 24-hour period. We aim to accumulate at least 300km in distance on the rowing machine. We will livestream our progress and donations are welcome via the College website. SCBC is the biggest student society at Selwyn, and continues to grow each year, with recent years seeing particularly strong uptake. However, with this growth comes a greater stretch on limited resources, making alumni support fundamental to our athletes’ development. To find more information and links to donate, see our website: https://lnkd.in/ePBar8EB

It was an honour to be invited as a panelist for the Women in STEMM celebration organised by the High Commission of India in London, in collaboration with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office - Research, Science and Innovation, to mark #InternationalWomensDay2025. Being recognised by your own country #India for your work and passion is truly humbling. My research focuses on creating sustainable, inclusive, and equitable built environments for those who need the most, and gender equality remains central to this vision. Grateful to share this platform with such incredible trailblazers, shaping the future through innovation and leadership! #WomenInSTEMM #IWD2025 #GenderEquality #Sustainability #InclusiveLeadership Cambridge Architecture University of Cambridge Selwyn College, University of Cambridge The official page for the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge

"When this role at Selwyn was advertised, it immediately clicked with me. I could use my public health nursing skills and tap into my knowledge of physical healthcare and mental health support. Now it feels like my dream job!" Lucy Turnell is Selwyn's first full-time, year-round college nurse, a provision only made possible by generous support from Fellow Benefactors Christina and Peter Dawson. We spoke to her about her role and how the welfare team works at Selwyn. Read our full interview below:
