  • It’s Friday and time for an injection of ideas and inspiration from the Sparck team who, as always, have been doing a lot of exploring, learning and reading. 📚 1. “I’d not heard of ‘human learning systems’ until recently,” says Paul Bailey. “It’s a really interesting perspective on how to approach complex public services.” It's about embracing complexity rather than battling it and the line “If the issues don’t respect organisational boundaries, why should we?” hits particularly hard. Find out more here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gJweKcH 2. “The state of digital government review, published last week, is a really interesting artefact,” says Ray Newman. “It’s especially interesting to see hard figures attached to the long-term benefits of investing in design and digital transformation, like the expectation that One Login will deliver £1.75 billion in ‘monetised benefits’ over the course of five years.” Read it here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gin9uekg 3. “I very much enjoyed this piece of experience design,” says Kate Potts, referring to Channel 4’s ‘Un-algorithmy algorithm’ – a deliberately quirky way of browsing its catalogue of shows. “I like that it addresses an unintended consequence of streaming – that we often spend more time deciding what to watch than actually watching. It's self-aware, in a very amusing way that helps Channel 4 stand out in contrast to, say, Netflix.” Check it out here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eTcrfTib Have you read or seen anything cool lately? • Human-centred design (HCD) is about putting people first – but it also makes services more efficient, and reduce costs. For example, in healthcare it might achieve two things: 1. Help patients get the information they need quickly and easily through apps and websites. 2. Reduce the number of appointments, missed appointments, and calls. The first meets a human need. The second *also* meets a human need – nobody wants to spend time on calls and appointments if it can be avoided. But it also meets the needs of the *system* to spend and waste less money. The right screen design, with the right words, based on user research and usability testing, can seriously move the dial on measurable metrics like this. #HumanCentredDesign #UserCentredDesign #design

Today, BJSS is delighted to share the news that we have agreed with CGI, one of the largest IT and business consulting services firms in the world, that the two organisations will join forces, pending regulatory approval. Our objectives as a business have always been to deliver excellence for our customers, create a great place to work for our people, and grow the business sustainably. Both companies are a perfect fit for each other. We share values and a focus on innovation, working with clients to shape the world, pioneering the delivery of complex, mission-critical systems. We are hugely proud of what we have delivered for our customers over the past 30 years, and we remain as committed as ever to delivering excellence to our clients. This collaboration marks the beginning of a bright future, and we couldn’t be more excited to embrace the journey ahead. • In the context of digital transformation and change there’s often a risk of service design being misunderstood as either a luxury, or a magic bullet. ⚠ In the latest post on the Sparck blog Dr Emma Murphy FRSA and Amy Middleton argue that, on the contrary, it’s an essential ‘golden thread’ through complex innovation projects. “In organisations whose cultures are resistant to adopting a human-centred design (HCD) approach, service design can be especially important,” writes Emma. “If you’ve worked with a business analyst (BA) then much of what a service designer does will seem familiar… but different. That familiarity can be helpful.” Read more on the blog 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dyAxK5eZ [Image description: A spool of thread.] #ServiceDesign #design #communities

  • Sparck futures thinking champion Matthew Mullan was the guest on the latest episode of the ‘Strive & Thrive’ podcast. It’s a great primer on how futures thinking can support business growth. 🎧 “You can start to say, for our business, what emerging developments can we anticipate that might make an impact?" says Matt. It’s about understanding big changes, such as climate change and rise of AI, and how your organisation can navigate them. You can listen in on LinkedIn via Easol 🔗 https://lnkd.in/em3Yvhqr It's also on Spotify 🔗 https://lnkd.in/getCtBd6 And on YouTube 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d4_q6v5x And do give Matt a shout if you want to know more about how futures thinking might apply to your business. 📞 #FuturesThinking #futures #strategy

  • Visual thinking amplifies a designer’s ability to think, share ideas, and communicate effectively. Or, in other words, (cliché Klaxon!) a picture is worth a thousand words. 🖼 Using sketches, diagrams, and even 3D models made from Lego, designers can explore freely and uncover connections that might not be obvious. Visual thinking can also make collaboration more productive. A simple visual representation of a problem or solution can transcend language barriers and create shared understanding. When visualised, abstract ideas become tangible, and stakeholders can engage with them more intuitively. One technique designers use in workshops is to get people to rapidly sketch out 6 ideas. You don’t have to be good at drawing – and the drawings don’t have to be good! The real value is in making people think differently, express themselves, and then present their ideas back to the group. Visual thinking also taps into our preference for images. It simplifies complexity and conveys feeling. For people who spend most of their time on video calls or writing emails, this switch can be totally liberating. Of course not everyone thinks visually, or works well in this context. That’s why we always consider accessibility when using visual design techniques – and why the final, concrete outputs from these exercises will usually be in writing. • Customer experience (CX) + futures thinking + product innovation = the perfect recipe for long-term business success. 🥗 We know that many of our clients are struggling with some or all of the following: • how to stand out in the market • uncertainty about the long-term future of their business • getting new products and services out to market CX is about making your product the one that customers feel excited about and warm towards. It’s the app they open or website they visit first. It’s the one they recommend to friends. It’s the one they stick with for years. (Connect with Kerrie Hughes for help here.) Futures thinking is about looking 5, 8, 10 years ahead, using tools and techniques to help your leadership team break free of short-term thinking. Sure, you’ve got tactical challenges right now – but how do you manoeuvre yourself into the best position to survive the next decade? (Talk to Matthew Mullan or Lauren Fridlington about this.) And product innovation unlocks all those ideas sitting on the wish list, half finished, or blocked by internal politics, that could start making you money if they *existed* and were available for your customers to *buy* now. It’s about accelerating design and delivery. (Rajiv Lewis is your man for a conversation about this.) Or, if you need a combination of all three – and you probably do! – then talk to Max Earp. He’s always up for learning about the challenges businesses face. [Image description: A quote from the opening line of the post.] #design #innovation #strategy

  • Have you ever considered setting up a community for your profession or area of expertise? In the latest post on the Sparck blog Paul Bailey explains how he helped make that happen. 💡 In his case, it was about creating a space for service designers in the East Midlands, working in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University. You can read the whole story, including notes on the value communities deliver, and Paul’s practical top tips, here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ei_H_tyH [Image description: A delicious slice of pizza with melting cheese.] #ServiceDesign #design #communities
