Construction is underway for Ascent, our latest project for ARC | Advanced Research Clusters, at their Oxford campus. This state-of-the-art 105,000 sq. ft facility is designed to drive innovation in the science, technology, and innovation sectors. Once complete, Ascent will create around 500 jobs, contribute £38 million GVA annually, and provide best-in-class features, including lab-ready spaces, a rooftop terrace, wellness areas, a gym, and end-of-trip facilities. Our design will create modern laboratory and office spaces that meet the highest standards. The development targets a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating, Fitwel accreditation, and a 40% reduction in carbon emissions—exceeding Oxford City's sustainability policies. Historic properties comprise a significant proportion of the UK's building stock, with 5.9 million buildings constructed before 1919. Careful intervention can transform them from liabilities into assets that are fit for the future. Spratley & Partners has a proud tradition of working with historic buildings and places. Renovating, restoring and breathing new life into existing buildings is fundamental to our practice. This week, we'll be at the #ListedPropertyShow in London. We’re excited to announce that Knighton Mill has been named a regional winner of the LABC Building Excellence Awards! The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards recognise quality in building projects and construction. LABC will enter all the regional award winners into the national award. We're looking forward to the ceremony and announcement in January. Knighton Mill is in the beautiful Cranborne Chase AONB. With evidence of the original mill on the site dating back to Domesday, the site included a series of historic waterways. Our brief was to design and build a new home that would sit sensitively into this landscape. Read the story: https://lnkd.in/eEU5sSs9 A huge thank you to everyone involved. The refurbishment of Parade Park Hotel has started on site. Last week, we visited Parade Park Hotel, a series of three connected Grade I Listed Georgian townhouses in the heart of Bath - work has officially commenced on the first phase of the refurbishment works, focusing on the roof. This milestone follows the successful granting of planning and Listed Building consent last year, which was made possible through close collaboration with local authorities and careful consideration of the buildings’ shared heritage. The project, located within the Bath Conservation Area and World Heritage Site, will restore the hotel’s historic character, strengthen its structural integrity, and introduce modern, accessible facilities. We’re excited to help transform these historic assets into a landmark destination. From Office to…Hotel? Residential? Hybrid Spaces? Innovation doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. There is so much value in seeing the potential in what’s already there and how you can work with it. At Spratley & Partners, we secured planning permission to transform a 260,000 sq. ft. office in the heart of Victoria into a 700+ room hotel, complete with restaurants and a coffee shop. We worked with the head of Design and Conservation at the Council to enhance the experience of the building from street level, incorporating materials that were sympathetic to both the surrounding buildings and the wider context of the regeneration of the Victoria area. This project also reflects a broader shift across the UK, where old, unused offices are being turned into exciting, flexible spaces like hotels. As the office market has changed, these conversions are meeting the growing demand for flexible, experience-focused spaces that cater to new ways of living and working. If you’re interested in how reuse can work across different sectors, take a look at some of our other projects: https://lnkd.in/ey4SmFMk

What role does context play in shaping architectural concepts? Design needs to go beyond aesthetics—it’s about understanding and responding to the environment. One of Spratley & Partners current residential projects, a replacement dwelling between the River Thames and a dense woodland, reflects this approach. The site presented unique challenges, bordered by a brick wall and tall trees. We embraced these features to create a home that feels rooted in its surroundings. The lower level is solid and grounded, mirroring the brick wall’s permanence. The upper levels are lighter and more open, with timber elements inspired by the trees, blending the structure into the natural setting. This thoughtful, context-driven approach not only respects the site but enhances the experience of living there—offering a stronger connection to nature. By responding carefully to each site, we create spaces that are both functional and deeply connected to their environment.

At Spratley & Partners, we proudly support four L7 apprentices studying at institutions, including the University of Nottingham, Oxford Brookes, and UWE Bristol. This pathway offers an essential, affordable route to qualification, combining work and study to create well-rounded professionals. The withdrawal of L7 funding would make it unaffordable for many practices and students, limiting access to the profession and reducing diversity. Apprenticeships also cultivate collaboration between practices and universities, supporting valuable research on topics such as embodied carbon and the circular economy. We strongly urge policymakers to preserve this vital programme, which benefits individuals, practices, and the future of our industry. https://lnkd.in/ePEVtbYc #RIBA #Architecture #Apprenticeships #FutureTalent #DiversityInArchitecture
Proud to sign a letter to @rachelreevesMP today to send the message loud and clear: #KeepFundingL7Apprenticeships. My Level 7 Apprenticeship gave me opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Don’t deny those opportunities to others. https://lnkd.in/ePX9_FmR As a current Level 7 architectural apprentice I would be incredibly disappointed to see the funding for this scheme withdrawn. I take huge value from being able to learn alongside my work and feel this is vital in bridging the gap between theory and practice, particularly important in our push to decarbonise construction. I see no other opportunity for the leading research of universities to be fed so quickly and effectively into industry with the chance to work holistically to solve the real world problems that often impede the delivery of these kind of things. The Level 7 apprenticeship funding offers an imperative opportunity for those from less wealthy backgrounds to train for high-skill jobs, without having to take extended periods away from work.
