More than £12m of grant funding will be invested into improving the borough's road infrastructure to support active travel and economic growth, following approval at a St Helens Borough Council Cabinet meeting this afternoon. Allocated from the 18813623's Sustainable Transport Scheme, a total of £12.048m has been awarded to the council to deliver two major projects that will unlock the potential of significant housing and town centre regeneration developments. £10m will go towards the Cowley Hill Link Road, which will support the redevelopment of the brownfield, former Pilkington Cowley Hill glassworks site that will deliver around 1,100 new homes and complimentary commercial/leisure facilities. Meanwhile, £2.048m will be used to improve pedestrian and cycle facilities at a busy five-arm roundabout on the outskirts of St Helens town centre - where there is currently limited safe, controlled crossing provision - to boost access to places like St Helens Retail Park and the Totally Wicked Stadium, home of St Helens R.F.C. and now Liverpool FC Women. The Cannington Shaw Preservation Trust CIC has announced the appointment of Clan Contracting Limited as the principal contractor for Phase One of works to stabilise and repair the No: 7 Bottle Shop – Cannington Shaw. This initial phase of works will see the scheduled monument and Grade II listed building - identified by Historic England as ‘the most intact example of a late 19th Century Bottle Shop anywhere in the world’ - receiving stabilisation work and repairs to protect and consolidate the structure. This has been made possible through £1.3m of funding from the Town Deals programme which aims to regenerate towns and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth John F Tabern, Project Director 💬 "This appointment follows a lengthy and exhaustive process of procurement and tendering, but it was clear from the quality of Clan’s submission that they were the right fit for this initial phase of works. We have been impressed with the swiftness of their mobilisation, setting up at site less than a week after appointment and their willingness to engage with the Trust in all aspects of the project. "‘We at the Trust now have the task of finding the next phase of funding to carry us into the development work required to realise the vision of returning this historic heritage asset to its former glory and a productive and useful future within the town. It will not be easy, but we are determined to ensure the success of this project and will be working hard to achieve this." Welcoming the news on a recent site visit, Councillor Richard McCauley, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth and Regeneration, said: “Seeing the site come to life is a really exciting time and it’s great to see that the Town Deal Fund is supporting projects like this which recognise our borough’s heavily intertwined heritage in the glass making industry and protect this historically important site for future generations with the trust’s bold vision to bring it back in to use for our communities to use once again.” Located on land just past the Steve Prescott Bridge, Cannington Shaw No.7 Bottle Shop was once the site of one of the world’s first fully operational regenerative furnaces for continuous glass bottle production and is one of the few surviving examples of St Helens Borough’s early industrial heritage.

🗞️ Our Day Opportunities service is trialling an innovative piece of technology which helps improve the wellbeing of people living with cognitive challenges. For the past few months, service users at Stephenson’s Resource Centre in Rainhill, one of three venues in the borough that supports 87 adults aged 19 and over with learning disabilities and additional needs, have benefited from the Happiness Programme - a first-of-its-kind interactive light technology that provides meaningful activities for residents and patients in care homes and care settings. Using an interactive projector, light projects onto a surface and as hands, arms or feet move through the light, games that are projected – from painting pictures and brushing leaves to popping bubbles and playing tennis – begin to change and move.
