"Without significant investment into universities and university towns, many of the UK’s top educational institutions will lose their edge on the global stage." Our director, Michael Rainsford, wrote an op-ed for the Evening Standard, calling on the new government to place the higher education sector at the heart of its growth plans. UK universities face financial and structural challenges, including underfunding, declining international student numbers, and a severe student housing shortage. These issues threaten their global standing and could lead to long-term economic ramifications. Without significant investment, the higher education sector's potential to drive economic growth and support regional economies is at risk, as universities struggle with budget deficits, job cuts, and course closures. TL;DR: 📈 Acceptances up 1.7% YoY 🌏 Non-EU student numbers down 🇨🇳 Chinese student acceptances down 17.9% YoY 🇮🇳 India also sees a decline from 2023 These numbers will continue to grow as Clearing progresses. “One of the issues, particularly for domestic students, is you have rents that have been going up that have not been matched by a growth in maintenance loans... It is not going to help your average domestic student who may have a budget of £130 a week, for example. That’s the big challenge and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon.” It is great to see our Head of Research, Richard Ward, and StuRents data featured in The Times's recent article covering domestic students' ongoing struggle to secure suitable accommodation. London, Bristol, and Glasgow have particularly high rents. The June '24 UCAS data shows a changing international student landscape: 🇨🇳 Applicant numbers from China to the UK have slowed since 2022, albeit with a slight increase in 2023. 🇮🇳 Applications from India show a slight decline. 🇳🇬 Numbers from Nigeria dropped significantly (50%), allowing the UAE and Türkiye to surpass it - both have seen consistent growth since 2006. 🇺🇸 The USA now ranks third for non-EU applications due to a decline from Hong Kong. China and India remain crucial for student housing markets, but trends show potential growth opportunities in the US and Türkiye, suggesting that providers must adapt their focus accordingly. #studentaccommodation #studenthousing #ucas #internationalstudents #highereducation

The June '24 UCAS data shows a changing landscape for UK students: 🇬🇧 UK applicants have decreased since 2021, with a slight rise in 18-year-olds applying in 2024, yet their overall proportion has dropped. 🌏 Non-EU applications have been climbing since 2006 but fell for the first time since 2016. 🇪🇺 EU numbers continue to decrease after Brexit. 🎓 Older UK students (21-24) are applying much less, >24,000 fewer applications compared to 2010. #studentaccommodation #studenthousing #ukstudents #ucas #ukuniversities

Thanks to all who attended yesterday's roundtable event on the student accommodation sector, especially to Kim Nisbett at Unite Students for presenting. We touched on some interesting points, here are some key takeaways from our discussions: - Planning takes so long that when a scheme is initially underwritten (appraised), by the time planning is granted, the market fundamentals may have shifted. - The biggest concern is international numbers. It's hard to get a true grasp, but it looks like they will be down this year. - Planning environment remains a huge challenge for building new stock - A clear need for more beds nationally, but local fundamentals vary hugely. Nottingham has started to shift from undersupply to possible oversupply. #studentaccommodation #studenthousing #pbsa #hmo
