We've been supporting customers who buy property or land for development across the coalfields since 1994. We get some great questions coming in and as such, we’ve created a Mining Myth Buster series to ensure our customers feel fully supported to make safe, well-informed decisions. This month, we discuss the key differences between our residential CON29M and our licensed data. We hope you find our series of value, if you have a question you would like us to answer, please send it in to customerservice@coal.gov.uk and we might just feature your question in our upcoming episodes. Great to visit one of our mine water treatment schemes on the North East coast exploring its potential to heat homes and businesses. The scheme in County Durham was built in 2002 and treats about 2,200 million litres of water each year. The water from the former coal mines has been heated naturally underground to around 20 degrees Celsius, we can then recover this heat and distribute via heat networks to supply secure, low-carbon space heating and hot water. Mine water heat is a real opportunity in coalfield areas across Great Britain and we have more than 80 mine water treatment schemes where water is already being pumped to the surface. Interested? Our permitting team have been in Littleborough this week to visit a new flood storage reservoir being constructed by VolkerStevin, on behalf of the Environment Agency. Once completed, the Littleborough phases of the Flood Risk Management Scheme are projected to provide flood risk protection to 337 homes and 185 non-residential properties. As the scheme is being developed on a coalfield, we’ve worked with them to enable water resource consents to ensure safe development and for ground investigations to be carried out to support the design of the scheme. This is one of many examples of how our team ensure safe development on the coalfield and support with appraising engineering projects. Our engineers will be explaining more about the engineering appraisal process at the British Drilling Association webinar on 23 October, to find out more visit: https://lnkd.in/eSvwWFGn

The Coal Authority reposted this
Through the Pagabo public sector procurement framework, we've been appointed by The Coal Authority to design and build a new water treatment scheme in Yorkshire. Part of the approach to long term management of rising mine water in old underground coal workings, James Bagnall Coal Programme Lead, for the Coal Authority, explains more: “We are looking forward to working with Kier to deliver this important environmental scheme. The Coal Authority manages over 80 mine water treatment schemes across Britain, handling and treating over 122 billion litres of water a year. At Thorpe Hesley, mine water levels have been rising since the 1980s and this important mine water treatment scheme will help to protect drinking water and the local environment.” The new pumped-passive mine water treatment scheme will be made up of settlement ponds, reed beds and associated pipework on a five-hectare site on land adjacent to the former colliery site. Commenting on the new contract award, Eddie Quinn, managing director for our Environment business, said: “We’re looking forward to applying our skills and experience designing and building engineering schemes with long-term habitat creation as part of this vital project in Yorkshire.” As well as habitat creation to improve biodiversity, new access tracks linking to existing footprints will enable people to enjoy the natural atmosphere of the scheme. Interested in knowing more? Check out the links in the comments for all the new contract award news and details about the Thorpe Hesley scheme. Fantastic to collaborate with our partners on advancing research into mine water heat. This valuable work helps us drive informed, science-based decisions that support the sustainable reuse of water in former coal mines 💥
Re-use of the UK's coal mine water heating, cooling and thermal storage resource is increasing in scale. This upward trajectory requires 3D planning, regulation and licensing to manage sustainable deployment. Read the new paper - a collaboration between BGS and The Coal Authority - to understand how the UK Geoenergy Observatory in Glasgow and the Coal Authority's Mine Water Heat Living Lab in Gateshead, demonstrate early insights into measuring and monitoring heat-flow processes in real world settings to provide an evidence base into geothermal research in the UK. We continually look to innovate and deliver opportunities for people and the environment in mining areas. This includes enabling the use of low carbon mine water heat from disused coal mine infrastructure. Last year the first large scale, multi-user mine water heat scheme became a reality when the Gateshead mine water heat network began operating. Read more about the project that is estimated to save 72,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next 40 years in our latest Annual Report and Accounts: https://lnkd.in/e3Kuf5dv
