Connect. Create. Grow. Services for survivors of child sexual abuse

About us

The Green House has been providing therapy for people affected by sexual abuse for over 30 years. Founded in the 1970’s, we were formerly known as Avon Sexual Abuse Centre. As we began to support increasing numbers of children and young people, we made the tough decision to close our adults' service and focus our specialist support for children, young people, and their families affected by sexual abuse. Our aim is to help people affected by child sexual abuse and violence to recover from their trauma and help improve their well-being and resilience through the provision of specialist professional therapy, support groups, and resources. Research is at the heart of everything we do, and we are continuously developing our service model with survivors' voices at the heart of everything we do.

Access to pre-trial therapy continues to be a significant problem. All the challenges of the criminal justice system meet all the issues survivors of trauma face in being able to access support. Despite CPS guidelines changing to allow any kind of therapy and support pre-trial, services are still afraid, confused and worried about offering therapy. The Bluestar Project’s aim is to ensure that every therapy service is confident to open their doors, that every officer knows how to access notes correctly, and that every agency in the system realises that pre-trial guidelines apply to them too. Our hope is for every survivor of trauma to have access to the support they need while their case is pre-trial – for their voices to be recognised as the most important part of this journey. This year we will train nearly 3000 practitioners, reaching over 37,000 survivors across England and Wales. We are so proud of our Team, so we couldn’t be happier to share that we have been shortlisted for the CYP Now workforce award. Thanks so much to colleagues at the CPS, NPCC, NHS, Home Office and MOJ for your continued support. Have you witnessed or experienced the potential emotional, practical and further impacts of court delays? The Office of the Victims’ Commissioner want to hear from you - they have released two short surveys that shouldn’t take more than five minutes to complete. For Staff (Closes 31st August): https://lnkd.in/eVEDUfbH Welsh version: https://lnkd.in/eeY8428e Example of questions: What are the impacts of delays in the court system on victims (emotional, practical, engagement with the criminal justice system etc)? Read more below on the podcast launch event for ‘Conversations We’ve Never Had’, a groundbreaking podcast on child sexual abuse launched earlier this year by our CEO Gemma Halliwell and fellow leader in the sector, Candice Harris. The event was brilliantly chaired by Duncan Craig OBE of We Are Survivors.

Author of Indescribable, NHS Lived Experience Consultant and Podcast Co-Host of “Conversations We’ve Never Had”

Last night Gemma Halliwell and I launched our podcast “Conversations We’ve Never Had”. We chose Fortitude as our theme, the final episode in the series. https://lnkd.in/ey3mgJTw What an incredibly special night. Duncan Craig OBE was a brilliantly funny, smart and tender chair. The audience was filled with people who are working so hard to make a difference in this space, people we love and survivors who we are connected to through our lived experience. We appreciated every person there. Let’s keep having conversations that build ideas and connect us all, putting the shame where it belongs, with the perpetrator, because all I felt last night was kindness, strength and love.

CEO, The Green House - Director, the Bluestar Project - Co-host Conversations We've Never Had

To celebrate the launch of our podcast "Conversations we've never had" Candice Harris and I are so excited to share with you an invitation to a live event in London on the 16th of July, Owl Book Shop, Kentish Town. We'll be focussing on our final episode Fortitude and thinking about how support for children who have experienced sexual abuse needs to change. For us, this work has to sit in love, connection and hope for the future of our young people. As survivor communities we have to collaborate because this is not about us as individuals, it's about what we can do together to create change. This is an approach I constantly see Duncan Craig OBE modelling. Heart, collaboration, creativity, truth. Which is why we could not be more delighted to share that he will be joining us as our Chair for the evening. Please join us for the conversation, we'd love to see you there!

“RSHE is about more than just teaching the biological aspects of sex. It’s about understanding consent, building healthy relationships, recognising abusive behaviours, and knowing where to seek help. This education helps us make informed decisions and respect others’ boundaries, which is crucial for our wellbeing.” This blog from Brook explores how proposed age limits in the draft RSHE guidance might put young people at risk: https://lnkd.in/ezrit7PY We have until the 11th of July to respond to the guidance and make our voices heard. Find out how here: https://lnkd.in/eJSkKzu3
