Scotland’s nature is in trouble 🏴🌿 We want to see our seas and rivers teeming with life, our native woodlands regenerating, our fields buzzing with pollinators, and much more. Nature needs to be funded properly in order to recover, but this year the Scottish government worryingly cut £5 million from its nature restoration fund. Sign the petition telling finance secretary Shona Robison not to cut funding for nature in the upcoming Scottish budget 👉 https://lnkd.in/eeucVEp2

Meet Edinburgh Zoo's purr-fact new Pallas's cat, Akiko! He's settling in well and we hope to welcome a mate for him soon. Make sure to say hello on your next visit 👋 Our charity has managed the breeding programme for Pallas's cats for over 15 years and in that time helped establish the global conservation project PICA (Pallas's cat International Conservation Alliance), alongside project partners Stiftelsen Nordens Ark and Snow Leopard Trust. Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eR6cYwBg Did you know that Pallas's cats are often nicknamed the ‘original grumpy cat’ because of their sulky facial expressions? 😾

The Scottish capercaillie population is in drastic decline and we are keen to aid in its recovery. We are delighted to see the Capercaillie Emergency Plan published this week by Cairngorms National Park Authority and NatureScot 💙 The plan will improve capercaillie conservation, with key objectives to be achieved before 2030. RZSS WildGenes has been working closely with Cairngorms National Park Authority on developing genetic techniques to improve capercaillie monitoring and identify genetic diversity across the range 🧬 We have successfully developed a genetic technique to count capercaillie at lek sites and hope to extend this approach, continuing the mission to reverse the decline of this iconic species. RZSS vets have also piloted an approach to assess parasites in the capercaillie population to better understand morbidity in this species and its close relatives sharing the Cairngorms National Park. For the first time in 40 years, adult Partula snails who were born in the wild have been found 🐌✨ During the annual reintroduction of snails to their French Polynesian island home, unmarked snails were found! Proof that previously reintroduced snails have successfully bred 💛 Ten species and sub-species of the tropical snails, reared here at Edinburgh Zoo, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Bristol Zoo Project, Detroit Zoological Society, Marwell Wildlife, Saint Louis Zoo, Sedgwick County Zoo, Woodland Park Zoo and Zoo Schwerin, travelled more than 15,000km to Tahiti at the beginning of September.
