Scaling climate finance to the last-mile

About us

Terraspect’s climate financial infrastructure helps transparently disburse community compensation from nature-based projects scalably and efficiently. Its platform is used by developers, buyers, and local partners as a single source of truth to ensure communities are fully compensated. This simplifies payment distribution, helping buyers mitigate risk, developers show impact, and communities receive fair compensation. Terraspect works with regulated payment service partners to offer low cost disbursement using methods communities already use.

Today, Terraspect has launched the first comprehensive toolkit on how to ensure that carbon finance delivers for Indigenous peoples and local communities. Our guide, From Co-Benefits to Core-Benefits: How to Ensure Carbon Finance is Fairly and Transparently Delivered, provides guidance on the design and implementation of community compensation plans that are equitable, transparent, and accountable. ✅ We designed the guidance specifically for buyers, developers, and community-based organisations. Co-founder & CEO @ Terraspect | transparent climate finance | we’re hiring!

🌲 How do we scale nature restoration to billions of hectares before the end of the decade? This is the key question that underpins the work we do at Terraspect. To help find some answers to this, Wilhelm Zhao and I were fortunate enough to visit Ponterra's 10,000 hectare restoration project in Panama's Azuero Peninsula. This is an ambitious project. By partnering with local landowners to help transition from cattle-rearing to nature reforestation, the project sequesters carbon and helps restore biodiversity in a critical corridor within which much of Panama’s primary forest has been cut for cattle farming. Underpinning this climate benefit, the project’s long-term viability will ultimately come from the strength of its partnership with the community. The critical but everyday reality of maintaining these relationships comes down to consistent and hands-on community engagement. Jobs created, community forums rendered, and benefits disbursed. As this project scales to achieve its ambitious vision of 6M+ trees planted, there will be immense benefit (and collective ownership) that will accrue to the current and next generation in the community. Immense props to the dedicated and skilled team getting this project live, and in particular thanks to Andrew Coates, Sarah Spalding Elton, Hubert Szczygieł, Jason Arlen Clark, PhD, and Jose Deago Corro for all their time and patience in sharing their wisdom and the privilege of planting some trees myself! 🌱 The first Symbiosis RFP is now live! 🌳  Our first RFP focuses on reforestation and agroforestry projects and is a pivotal milestone to translate our commitment to contract for up to 20 million tonnes of high-quality nature-based carbon removal credits into action. 📈 This RFP reflects months of work and input from developers, experts, scientists, buyers, NGOs, investors, standard bodies, and other stakeholders from across the ecosystem. We designed the process to lower barriers to entry for developers by streamlining access to multiple buyers at once while implementing a best-in-class diligence approach to rigorously evaluate project alignment with our Quality Criteria (link in comments). Through this process, we aim to: ✅ Illustrate what high-quality nature-based carbon removal projects look like and clarify buyer expectations ✅ Help projects to access lower-cost financing by signing bankable offtake agreements with our members - Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce ✅ Share guidance and case studies over time to encourage more capital off the sidelines, more projects into development, and more buyers to the table 💡 To learn more about our RFP approach check out our blog post (link in comments). 📝 Project developers: To apply, submit your applications by the January 31, 2025 priority deadline to guarantee an initial review. Learn more and submit your proposal via our website (link in comments). 📅 For an overview of the RFP process and timeline, please join us for our second project developer webinar on 12/17 at 8am PT / 11am ET. • What is it that caught our attention in this report❓ 🔎 It highlights the progress being made to deliver $1.7 billion to secure land tenure and support forest guardianship for Indigenous people and local communities. Many of these groups continue to struggle to access funds directly due to donors’ risk aversion and administration requirements and the limited legal and financial infrastructure of the grantees. 🌳Building infrastructure that transparently directs finance to IPs and LCs is critical in order to overcome these challenges and ensure that they benefit from the protection and restoration activities that occur on their lands. Terrapect is part of the movement building this infrastructure with a focus on ensuring carbon markets deliver equitable and transparent funding to local communities. • What is a community compensation distribution mechanism❓ Terraspect believes ‘community compensation’ is more accurate than ‘benefit sharing’ or ‘co-benefits’ as these terms imply that the local community is passive in a carbon project and is simply granted benefits as an act of generosity. Community compensation, on the other hand, suggests a rightful payment in return for active, critical contributions to a carbon project. A community compensation distribution mechanism is a way to pay local people for their conservation or restoration work that is context-specific and traceable. A typical distribution mechanism considers: 1️⃣ What to pay  2️⃣ How to pay it  3️⃣ How to audit it The design is determined through engagement and consultation with the community, grassroots organisations, local partners and the buyer or project investor. ⚖️ These principles balance the trade-offs between compensation flowing to the community versus imposing external requirements that reshape the internal structure. Payments can be monetary, non-monetary, in-kind of a hybrid: 💲 Monetary and non-monetary compensation is often distributed to the community, typically through specific vehicles such as community trust funds, ecotourism funds or group bank accounts. ❤️ In-kind compensation can be a positive thing for the community when it supports critical infrastructure which didn’t exist before. This development needs to benefit all community members, which can be hard to determine. Dig deeper into the discussion of what to pay in section 3 of our white paper - From co-benefits to core-benefits. 👇 https://lnkd.in/enn36Ekv #communitycompensation #carbonfinance

📣Conserving 80% of the Brazilian Amazon would cost $1.7-2.8B annually which is why it’s fantastic to see the announcement by the United States, and 12 partners, to launch the Brazil Restoration and Bioeconomy Finance Coalition. The coalition aims to mobilise $10bn for land restoration and bio-economy related projects by 2030. 🔎When you take a closer look, you see that this commitment includes investments of at least $500 million in projects that support Indigenous peoples and local communities in the Brazilian Amazon. This is news to be celebrated as IPs and LCs are critical agents in the implementation and success of nature-based projects that are often developed on their lands and should therefore be compensated fairly for their efforts in line with principles of distributive justice. • Oxfam found that up to $41 billion in World Bank climate finance is unaccounted for due to poor record-keeping practices. That’s nearly 40 percent of all climate funds dispersed by the bank over the last seven years. Yes, it seems the way large-scale climate finance flows today is broken. But Terraspect is working hard to find solutions – and we’re starting with carbon markets. We are building the infrastructure to direct global climate funding to where it’s most needed. We ensure funding reaches communities on the ground transparently and efficiently, with minimal intermediation or high FX costs. Learn more about how we do it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/d77H6Kg5 Read the full report here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dhPNktVE #carbonfinance #community #transparency
