Public Safety

Creating the safest community.

About us

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service serves a resident population of 1.104 million divided amongst the five constituent councils of Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland in the North East of England. Our vision for the community will be achieved by providing the people of Tyne and Wear with the services they want and need, to the highest possible standard; "Creating the Safest Community" Our mission will help us to secure this vision; "To Save Life, Reduce Risk, Provide Humanitarian Services and Protect the Environment" We also work in the community carrying out home fire risk assessments, conducting visits to schools and advising businesses on fire safety. We are also committed to supporting and working with children and young people in the region through initiatives such as Young Firefighters Association (YFA), Prince's Trust and the Phoenix Project. We recognise the importance of partnerships with the communities we serve and key agencies in Tyne and Wear, this will help us to achieve our vision of creating the safest community. The Fire Authority is responsible for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and is required by law to publish certain performance indicators annually in local press. I trust you will find them interesting; they show the statistical performance of the brigade for the last financial year but can not, or course, provide any indication of the true quality or scope of the service delivered every day to the citizens of Tyne and Wear.

  • Did you know that simply mimicking a starfish can help you stay afloat in the water during times of distress? To mark World Drowning Prevention Day (WDPD), Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, along with partners from across the region, have come together to join hands to form a unified floating circle at Cullercoats Bay, North Tyneside, and highlight the dangers of the water. Always remember to: 🔵 Be prepared 🔵 Never go alone 🔵 Acclimatise slowly to avoid cold water shock 🔵 Always be seen 🔵 Stay within your depth 🔵 Float to Live by making a starfish shape in the water Call 999 when reporting emergency incidents on land and ask for the fire service, or call 112 and ask for the coastguard if you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble along the coast. PLUS, we will also be hosting a free water safety event on Newcastle Quayside (near the Millennium Bridge) from 11 am to 3 pm this Sunday. People, young and old, will be able to have a tour of a fire appliance and watch a water rescue demonstration by our fireboat team. • Last week, firefighters from Red Watch at South Shields Community Fire Station carried out joint cliff rescue training with the North East Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) 🚑🚒 Our rope rescue crews gave the HART technicians an overview of essential rope set up for cliff rescues before assisting them part way down the cliff as an introduction to joint rope working. This helps both services train should we be required to assist HART technicians in reaching a casualty at an incident. The HART crews then performed a simulated medical intervention on a casualty who had suffered a fall from a height. It was turned over to the fire crews to take part in various hands-on skill sessions, including airway management and tourniquet application. Crews from Byker Community Fire Station were also in attendance and invited to join in the trauma skills session. This training exercise shows how blue-light emergency service teams work and train together for every eventuality.

  • Our Fire Safety team recently welcomed representatives from Northern Electrical Fire Security Ltd. including Lee Baxter to TWFRS Service Headquarters in Washington to deliver a joint training session to our colleagues.    This enabled us to provide refresher training in relation to smoke detection equipment, installation and legislation.   The three hour session updated teammates on installation guides for a variety of different premises and addressed emerging technologies.    This essential training ensures that our colleagues help to keep residents and business communities across Tyne and Wear safe from harm.

  • We recently delivered some essential throw line training to the team at By The River Brew Co. 🚒⚓️   In support of the waterside responder scheme, officers from our prevention and education team recently joined forces with the RNLI to provide free water safety training to businesses that trade alongside our waters.   Training includes supplying venues with throw lines that are kept on their premises to be used in an emergency.   Would you like to receive some lifesaving training?
