On a mission to grow the social venture ecosystem coming out of London universities 🚀 | SIS Ventures IC Chair | Board member of the Clothworkers Foundation | Growth Impact Fund Impact Advisory Group Member
🌟 What a Launch! Last Wednesday, we proudly unveiled London Social Ventures – a coalition of London’s leading universities committed to fostering social ventures emerging from the capital’s university landscape. Our mission? To provide these ventures with the resources, networks, and expertise they need to make a lasting impact on London’s social and economic wellbeing. With over 100 guests from across London’s diverse ecosystem, the energy in the room was inspiring as we explored new ways to accelerate social change through university-led social innovation. 🗣️ Sir Stephen Timms MP opened with an inspiring message, emphasizing the power of collaborative efforts like London Social Ventures in bringing together institutions, businesses, and government to create meaningful impact. He also shared how this initiative aligns with the new Labour government’s focus on inclusive economic growth and called for collective action to build a more connected and resilient London. 🗣️ We had the pleasure of hearing from Janet Coyle CBE from London & Partners, whose keynote resonated deeply with the audience. Janet shared her vision of London as a global leader in social innovation, advocating for purpose-driven partnerships that bridge the gap between private, public, and social sectors. 🗣️ Antonia Jennings from Centre for London, Jamie Broderick of the Impact Investing Institute, Rebecca Burns from British Land, and Phil Clare of Queen Mary Innovation discussed London’s pressing social challenges and how social ventures can address them. From transforming procurement to engaging communities, they explored how innovative, place-based solutions can redefine London’s urban landscape both now and in the future. 🗣️ Chaired by Kieran John, this session showcased university-led ventures, with amazing Charlie Blair of The Blair Academy and Julie Lanigan of TRIMTOTS C.I.C. sharing their journeys, challenges, and rewards in building social ventures from as a student and within academia respectively. David Miller and Clare Moses added perspectives on the crucial support universities and partners like Barclays Eagle Labs provide, highlighting the essential role of mentorship and institutional backing in social entrepreneurship. 🗣️ We closed with presentations from our pilot ventures – speek, RecycleLab, Chamiah Dewey , EDRAF, and Leon Barker – each sharing their work and visions for the future. We’re thrilled to be supporting them on their journey! 🚀 This is just the beginning! We’re excited to launch our first venture programme and announce upcoming pilots. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month – and we want to spotlight the UCLB spinout Endomag’s journey to impact. Endomag, the innovative UCL med-tech spinout has been on quite the journey; from its formation in 2007 to solve a real world issue, to being purchased in 2024 for $310m by Hologic. Formed by UCL academics Professor Quentin Pankhurst and Simon Hattersley, in collaboration with Professor Audrius Brazdeikis, Endomag provides surgical guidance solutions for clinicians working in breast cancer management in Europe and North America. The company’s problem-solving ethos and relationships with clinicians across the world have led to the exciting innovation, a product which helps surgeons to mark the location of the primary breast cancer tumour. “Our mission at Endomag is all about helping clinicians to solve their challenges and provide a better standard of cancer care. We’re proud to be playing a part in developing products that improve outcomes and experiences for cancer patients around the world,” says Eric Mayes, CEO, Endomag #BCAM #MedTech #Spinout Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eans_tx5

Very proud to see that UCL is amongst Europe’s top universities for number of startup/Spinout businesses with academic patent applications. The talented team at UCL Business Ltd work closely with UCLs academics to nurture the most promising research from lab to market, and patenting is an important part of that journey. It’s a great indicator of the level of innovation and the flow of word-changing ideas which are being commercialised to make a real difference - from medical treatments and diagnostics to AI, social ventures and solutions to achieve net-zero.
Interesting to see four UK universities in the top ten in Europe for numbers of startups based on university patent applications. This report from the European Patent Office highlights the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London and UCL as leaders in startup generation. It is often said that the UK is great at inventing, but poor at commercialising; this seems to tell a different story, at least in European terms. In total, German universities file nearly twice as many patent applications as UK universities according to the report, but the number of startups created from these applications is more than 50% higher in the UK. Worth noting for the innovation and growth agenda of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the excellent work of PraxisAuril. https://lnkd.in/enaEe7M2

We're delighted to be a part of London Social Ventures, an exciting initiative bringing together London’s leading universities to support the growth of social ventures arising from the capital. Led by Queen Mary University of London and UCL, London Social Ventures will provide critical pre-seed funding, mentoring and a robust support network for university-led social ventures that are addressing some of the biggest challenges facing our communities. The first 14 social ventures to be supported by the initiative’s ‘Advanced Support Programme’ were announced today, at an official launch for London Social Ventures and are addressing issues ranging from sustainability, to healthy eating. Trimtots, for example, is an immersive healthy eating programme for families and young children formed out of the behavioural and nutrition research of UCL academic Julie Lannigan and colleagues. Dr. Steven Schooling, Managing Director of UCL Business (UCLB) commented: “We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. This week welcomes the formal launch of London Social Ventures, a collective of London universities alongside a range of non-university partners, which aims to support students and academics to create and grow social ventures coming out of London universities. It is really exciting to have reached this stage as we begin to start our work here in London. Social ventures originating from a university’s knowledge base hold immense potential to generate significant social and economic impact. While the availability of resources for social ventures has increased, critical gaps and challenges still exist, making it difficult for them to access this support. London Social Ventures aims to launch several pilot programs over the next 12 months that aim to build a strong pipeline of university-based social ventures while gaining deeper insights into the support they need to grow and achieve long-term sustainability. I enjoyed speaking with Pioneers Post about our work and it was great to feature some of the social ventures that London Social Ventures is looking to work with during its pilot year such as TRIMTOTS C.I.C., Simba Technologies and RecycleLab showcasing the breadth and exciting potential that universities have in developing social venture models. It was also great to feature the support our project has received from Sir Stephen Timms MP who has highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration and the potential that London universities have in supporting the growth of social impact here in London and beyond through this project. If you want to find out more about London Social Ventures click on the link below to read more. Also, keep your eyes peeled as we launch our website and bring together a range of voices at our launch event this week including Stephen Timms, Janet Coyle CBE, Phil Clare, Jamie Broderick, Antonia Jennings, Mishcon de Reya LLP, Barclays Eagle Labs, Clare Moses, Rebecca Burns, British Land alongside a whole host of amazing social ventures that have spun out from London universities. https://lnkd.in/e_KXvrpK #socialventures #socialenterprise #london #universities
