Guilford Street Laboratories (GSL), a new UCLB spinout, is using machine learning-driven omic technology to deliver new innovative assays with higher precision. GSL aims to revolutionise diagnosis and monitoring of treatment for clinical trials and equip clients with crucial data that is more accurate, sensitive and specific than currently available. The spinout was founded by Professor Kevin Mills, Dr Tomas Baldwin, and Dr Wendy Heywood from the Biological Mass Spectrometry Research Centre at the GOS Institute of Child Health. With this week marking the World Health Organization's World Sight Day, it has been an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting our eyes and vision, raise awareness of vision impairment and blindness, and promote eye and vision care 👁️ Yesterday we spotlighted the work of Tenpoint Therapeutics Ltd, the UCLB spinout revolutionising therapies for degenerative eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Another UCLB spinout MeiraGTx develops advanced therapies to address vision loss caused by genetic conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa. MeiraGTx is one of five UCLB spinouts listed on Nasdaq, reflecting the significant interest and confidence in its potential. Professor Irene Tracey, VC of the University of Oxford highlights the important role that Proof of Concept funding can play in allowing the UK’s future businesses to flourish. UK university spinouts such as Autolus Therapeutics have benefitted greatly from this funding in their earliest stages, illustrating why it should be a vital step in supporting the UK’s businesses of the future. A UCL-led team is conducting a study to evaluate the impact of the Genomics England Generation Study. The Generation Study plans to provide genomic screening for 100,000 newborns. The evaluation, led by Dr Celine Lewis and Dr Melissa Hill, will explore the feasibility, acceptability, clinical benefit, and cost-effectiveness of integrating genomic newborn screening (gNBS) into routine care. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g2yGrUVP

Science|Business highlights the growing support available for social impact start-ups and initiatives such as London Social Ventures, introduced to encourage the future success of the sector. Businesses for social good can often face more challenges in the early stages when compared to peers focused solely on financial returns. London Social Ventures is on a mission to address this. In its pilot year, initially funded by Research England, the coalition of London universities plans to address the gap in the support available for start-ups with a social mission, in the capital. The initiative, led by Queen Mary University of London and UCL, will introduce a venture building programme, with a cohort of aspiring Social Ventures. The programme looks to support entrepreneurs to a stage where they can take on their first customer from the public sector.
