RDR PhD student, Rebekah Yore, has launched a travel business on the foundation of her varied career as a humanitarian and academic researcher. ✈️ Read more about Rebekah’s new venture: https://lnkd.in/eievZV2K #HumanitarianEntrepreneurship #WeAreRDR
PhD @ UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR); Serve On SAR ops; GA pilot (fixed wing, rotary in training); entrepreneur
Greetings folks. So, I've recently ventured into business and started my own bespoke travel company. In a bid for long-sought self-determination, I see this new challenge as a way of slowly building an eventual life in which I find fulfilment, freedom, variety and interest, and genuine servitude to the world and my fellow beings in a multitude of ways. "What?" I hear you say. "Where has that come from and how are you going to achieve all of that in...travel?" This will be revealed in time. But, rest assured, I'm not giving up my current life and identity - I'm still a dedicated disaster researcher, wannabe pilot and humanitarian responder! But I'm also now a businesswoman, chasing another dream simultaneously. Despite appearances, it's not altogether unrelated. Please give my business page a follow to find out more and to follow my journey into entrepreneurship. All will hopefully become clear. Advice and feedback are always welcome, and thanks in advance for your support! Find me here: Rebekah

🎉 Exciting News! I am thrilled to announce that myself and Barbara Lipietz have been awarded a grant (UCL Grand Challenges - Climate Crisis) for the project “Displaceability and the climate crisis: addressing the connections". A warm thank you to Barbara for her continuous partnership and support throughout the years, which has ultimately led to the development of this project. I am looking forward to working together again. I am also looking forward to connecting with the emerging network of researchers looking at displaceability. Congratulations to Dr Bayes Ahmed on this significant recognition of his impactful work!
I am pleased to share that in 2024, I ranked in the global top 0.37% of highly-cited scientists in "Geological and Geomatics Engineering", coming in 259th out of 69,076. Additionally, I ranked in the top 1.25% for career-long citation impact. While I am honoured by these citations, I firmly believe that true academic worth is not just measured by citations but by the real-world impact our work has on vulnerable and frontline communities. Creating knowledge that makes a tangible difference is my lifelong commitment. Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support. Here is to making meaningful contributions that benefit humanity! Our undergraduate students have the opportunity to lead impactful work in international organisations. Well done Izzy Passey and Kartik Singh Rathore for running the British Red Cross Takeover Challenge 2024! 👏
After months of planning, Takeover Challenge 2024 is complete! British Red Cross 🙌 I really enjoyed running the event on Zoom beside Gary Mountain, Kartik Singh Rathore and Wendy Solesbury MBE who were excellent co-hosts from the Youth Engagement Team. The aim of this annual event is to bring young volunteers and staff together to discuss relevant issues and educate participants on the values and work of the organisation. This year we chose the theme ‘Staying neutral: How can the British Red Cross adapt to modern crises?’. Neutrality is a fundamental principle of the BRC, and distinguishes it from many other humanitarian organisations. I felt this was a pressing discussion to have with young humanitarians at this moment in time when the world seems to be becoming ever more polarised, pushing humanitarian organisations to their limit. What is the importance of neutrality within the BRC? How is the BRC's neutrality practised in times of crisis? Is the BRC’s neutrality still fit for use in modern crises? I was grateful to hear the perspectives of the young participants who were very willing to propose their own ideas. Many thanks to our guest speakers and networkers: Mairi Allan, Adeline Siffert, Claire Clement, Pasca Lane, Hanan El-Wandi, Dafydd Beech, Emily Fabian, Karsten Voigt, Clotilde Lasocki, Gary Morgan, Mike Goodhand, Durga Rai, Kiera Moore, Laura Tappenden, Naziha El Moussaoui, Helena Roberts, William Spencer, Katherine Noble, Nathalie Martin, Rebecca Dawson, Carney Bonner, Emily Knox and Patience Foya. I'm thrilled to remain with the organisation as a Youth Engagement Volunteer 😊

I'm looking forward to attending the "Cost-Effective and Fair Climate Change Adaptation" event this Wednesday September 18th at UCL with a great set of international speakers and discussants from across government, finance, engineering, planning, design, and civil society. I will be giving a keynote intervention on "management of adaptation at the urban level" drawing on examples from KDI and partner's work with municipal, civil society, and community partners in the US, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mexico on innovative technical and financing solutions for co-designing cost-effective and equitable green infrastructure projects. Looking forward to the facilitation of our inspiring trio of hosts Professor Priti Parikh FICE Christopher Hurst Mark Pelling. Thanks to UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR), The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction UCL and the European Investment Bank (EIB) for convening this important session.
On 18 September, join us for a hybrid event on deploying nature-based solutions and green infrastructure in urban areas. Part of the Urban Climate Change Adaptation Series, the event is jointly organised with The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction UCL and European Investment Bank (EIB) to convene academic researchers and senior policy actors focused on the design, financing and delivery of climate change adaptation in cities. Please note this event is first-come, first-served and has limited capacity. Hosts: Professor Priti Parikh FICE, Mark Pelling and Christopher Hurst.
