The University of Glasgow's Formula Student Team.

About us

UGRacing is a Formula Student team based within the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Each year, undergraduates from all levels and disciplines come together to conceptualise, design, manufacture, and race a single seat Formula style race car. The team competes every July in Formula Student at the Silverstone race circuit. UGRacing is run by students, for students, and is completely self-funded through partnership support and contributions. In 2022 UGRacing achieved first place in the Formula Student competition becoming FSUK champions and making our team only the third team ever from the UK to win, as well as the most successful team in Scottish history.

Another year of exceptionally hard work has come to an end for a brief but well-deserved break before we start up again for 2025. The team is home from sunny Silverstone and #FSUK24 back to the garage in Glasgow. Our second fully-electric FS-Class car came with it's fair share of challenges, hurdles, and problems to solve. In spite of this our team managed a staggering 10th overall, reaching the final in the Design and Cost & Manufacturing events, setting a placement record for the team for the second year in a row, as well as securing the Ansys Formula Student Overall Static Events winners' trophy! The driverless team finished in a very strong 3rd place overall, with improvements and optimizations apparent across all events. The strides taken by the driverless team will become incredibly important as focus slowly shifts towards the development of an autonomous ADS platform in the team's future. An incredible performance by our sim racing team in the Williams Esports Sim Racing Series also lent us both the Engineering Challenge win, as well as the overall win for the second year in a row. Last but by no means least: Not just Lap Time Simulation, but Overall Winners as well! We are especially proud of our concept team for delivering such a groundbreaking performance for many teammembers' first year in UGRacing. The future looks bright with such talented engineers at the helm leading the charge for 2025. With that being said, we could not have done this without our partners, and everyone else who believed in us. We appreciate your immense support and hope to see you all soon for the road to FSUK2025! 💛🖤

This weekend Joseph Agrane and I took part in the first European Defense Tech hackathon in Munich. There were lots of great mentors, fellow hackers, and project suggestions, as well as an awesome location for the work to take place. We worked on an idea using a network of microphones to detect UAVs, completing a simulation of our solution and almost a full prototype. Huge congratulations to Benjamin Wolba, Jonatan H. Luther-Bergquist, and the team from Entrepreneur First for organising such a smooth event that pushes for solutions to such important problems!

Massive thanks to Hazel Shields and Pablo Levi from the Arnold Clark Innovation Center for hosting the UGRacing Driverless computer vision demonstration. We have developed an interactive demonstration which serves as an introduction to some of the technology involved in autonomous driving, specifically in the computer vision components present in many autonomous cars. The display in the Arnold Clark Innovation Center comes installed with road signs which can be held in front of the display and shows how autonomous cars use cameras to detect signs and pedestrians on the road. Additional thanks to Joseph Agrane and Varad Kulkarni who both contributed to this exciting project. We look forward to hearing feedback from people experiencing the demonstration and learning more about autonomous cars as we look to the future of automobility!

Over the last few weeks, the UGRacing Driverless team have completed some successful testing sessions at Knockhill Racing Circuit Ltd in Fife. Testing is always a great opportunity to get the team motivated - for all of our new recruits, this is the first time they'll have seen their code move the car! Additionally, it's an important time for knowledge transfer - the younger team members must be familiar with the car and know how to debug it. We're looking forward to demonstrating our progress at the IMechE Formula Student competition in July and seeing how far all of the other #driverless entries have come! Thanks to Stuart Gray for letting us use the facilities at Knockhill, Richard Atkinson for your help transporting the car, and Jolie Bonner for supervising us at each session. #formulastudent #ai #autonomous

Today we would like to give a special thankyou to Howco for their support and generosity to the team. Howco have been supporting our team at UGR for the past ten years and it’s so fantastic we continue to work with such a great manufacturer in making the best car the UK has ever seen. Howco is a world leading supplier and processer of high performance alloys and they are a fantastic support by machining our pedal box and rear bulkhead. Thankyou Howco Group ! 💛🖤💛🖤💛 #Howco #machining #manufacturer #FormulaStudent #FSUK #FSAE #IMechE #IMechEFormulaStudent #motorsport #f1 #engineering #scotland #Glasgow #Formula1 #Silverstone #motorsportphotography #instacars #carsofinstagram #grandprix #electriccars

Delighted that after 7 months and 40 pages of hard work, I was able to submit my dissertation today! ⭐️ Writing my dissertation, 'Evaluation of Object Detection for Autonomous Race Cars from Camera Data Using Deep Learning Methods', has been both a rewarding and challenging experience. Having had no prior knowledge of computer vision, I've really enjoyed delving into the statistics behind Convolutional Neural Networks and how they are implemented. It's been interesting to see a real-life application of the work I've done in courses throughout university, whilst also learning a lot of new concepts. The second part of my project looked at comparing CNNs to YOLO, and exploring the reasons why YOLO is preferred in the autonomous driving industry. This involved developing a YOLO V8 model which detected and classified traffic cones used at the IMechE FSAI competition, and evaluating its performance. It has been great to complete my dissertation in a topic I have heard about all through my past two years on the UGRacing Driverless Team. Being able to marry the academics I have been learning at university along with a personal interest has been extremely fulfilling, and I now feel I have a better understanding of the software used on the car, particularly for perception. I'd like to extend a huge thank you to my supervisor, Dr Xiaochen Yang, for her ongoing support in the project. I also wouldn't have been able to complete this project without the unwavering help of the Driverless Team at UGRacing, who not only sparked my interest in autonomous technology but helped to point me in the right direction throughout my project. I'd finally like to extend thanks to my friends and family, who without their support throughout my time at university as a whole, I would not have been writing this dissertation. One step closer to graduation! 🎓
