“Tech giants talk about training their systems on the work that has been created through the blood, sweat and tears of UK artists as though it’s a harmless enterprise when in reality it amounts to the Great Train Robbery.” UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has spoken out about Government’s “catastrophic” plans to let tech giants shun copyright rules and train their artificial intelligence systems on the work of UK music creators. The hugely controversial plans would allow AI firms to plunder music, images and text to train their models without paying music creators or even seeking their permission. Congratulations to PPL on this record breaking achievement!
Following the announcement of our record annual financial results for 2024 earlier this week, we are making our first distribution of 2025, with £71.1 million distributed to over 28,000 performers and recording rightsholders. The payment includes UK and international income collected through 2024 and the first few months of 2025, from 53 collective management organisations (CMOs). With 113 reciprocal agreements, PPL has the most extensive international network of CMO agreements, covering 95% of the recorded music market by value. As such, PPL is one of the first CMOs to receive international payments, helping ensure our members receive royalties due to them as soon as they become available from other territories. This quarter’s distribution includes new payments from the USA and numerous European countries for performers, and from Australia, France and the USA for recording rightsholders. The neighbouring rights marketplace continues to grow and according to the IFPI’s 2025 Global Music Report, it accounted for 9.7% ($2.9 billion) of global recorded music revenues in 2024, an increase of 5.9% annually.

UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has responded to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spring Statement: “While we share the ambition to realise benefits from AI there was nothing in her statement about the huge damage that would be caused to the music industry by Government plans to give AI firms unfettered access to music under sweeping changes to copyright law. The proposals would be a disaster for the UK’s £7.6 billion music industry.” Read Tom’s full response here: https://lnkd.in/eRZTH5Je
