We’ve had a fantastic week in London and Liverpool! It began with our Group CEO, Carol Young, attending the UK Government’s International Investment Summit in London, where she discussed the value of stability with the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, BlackRock’s Larry Fink and Brookfield’s Bruce Flatt. On Tuesday, our executive team hosted the annual Institutions’ Meeting in Liverpool to provide our sponsoring employers with an update on everything we’ve achieved over the past year and to answer their questions. We were also delighted to welcome Emma Reynolds MP, Minister for Pensions, to our headquarters at the Royal Liver Building on Tuesday, where she met members of our award-winning Pensions Operations team. The week continued with Carol taking part in a plenary session at the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association Annual Conference on Wednesday, where she and her fellow panellists discussed the future of defined benefit pensions. And to round things off with a feel good Friday moment, we thought we’d share the short film that opened our annual Institutions’ Meeting – marking the scheme’s 50th anniversary. https://lnkd.in/e2YbPpnc #Pensions #Investment #DBSchemes #Leadership #Collaboration #PLSAannual2024

About us
Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is the UK’s largest pension scheme by assets, with £90.8bn under management (31 March 2022), dedicated to providing retirement benefits to more than 500,000 members across 330 institutions in the higher education sector. USS was established in 1974, a corporate trustee responsible for administering both defined (DB) and other benefits and defined contributions (DC) pensions. It has offices in Liverpool and London. Our dedicated in-house investment team, USS Investment Management Limited, manages the majority of USS’ assets – including £28bn in private market investments. At USS we integrate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) factors into our investment decisions across all asset classes. Through engagement, voting and stewardship, we use our influence as a major institutional investor to promote good ESG practices. We work with policy makers and regulators to ensure that the concerns of long-term asset owners and investors are clearly understood. Our Group Chief Executive Carol Young took part in a plenary session on ‘the Future of DB’ at #PLSAannual24 yesterday. Chaired by Rob Orr (CEO, SAUL Trustee Company), Carol joined Simon True (CEO, Clara-Pensions), Fiona Brown (Group Head of Pensions and Benefits, Rolls Royce), Euan Miller (Managing Director, West Yorkshire Pension Fund) for the session. The wide-ranging discussion covered funding surpluses and stability, regulations, the PPF levy, and conditional indexation designs. Fittingly, given USS is one of the relatively few private DB schemes in the UK still open to new members, Carol’s “magic wand” wish for DB at the close of the session was for it to be seen as part of the future, not part of the past. #Pensions #DBSchemes #Leadership #FutureOfPensions #PLSA2024

Our CEO Carol Young sat down with the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer yesterday, alongside BlackRock’s Larry Fink and Brookfield’s Bruce Flatt, at the International Investment Summit. Carol discussed: 1. The UK as an important market for USS investments, as a hybrid scheme with open DB managing the pensions of an historic UK university sector 2. The potential for better alignment between private capital and public money to create opportunities which accurately match risk and return requirements of different investors 3. The need for a consistent and stable policy and economic landscape to provide the environment long-term capital needs to deploy funds #internationalinvestmentsummit #iis #pensions

We were delighted to welcome Emma Reynolds MP, Minister for Pensions, to our headquarters at the Royal Liver Building yesterday. The Minister took time out of her schedule at the PLSA conference, not only to speak to Group CEO Carol Young and our chair Dame Kate Barker about the history of the scheme and its unique hybrid characteristics, but also to hear from our award-winning Pensions Operations team about how they take care of our members. With long-term investors such as USS key to achieving the Government’s growth agenda, we look forward to working closely with Emma in her role to create an environment which best serves the interests of our members.

I am delighted to be involved with today’s International Investment Summit and look forward to the conversation later today with Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, alongside @Blackrock’s @LarryFink and @Brookfield’s @BruceFlatt, on how we can support and grow private investment in the UK market. As the largest private defined benefit pension scheme in the UK, we think that a healthy, growing and greener economy can only be good for USS members. We look forward to hearing more from the Government and investors about the progress towards achieving these goals.

Our Group Chief Executive Carol Young shared her thoughts at the Green Finance Institute’s recent event ‘Renewing Britain’s Leadership on the Green Transition’. At the event, leaders from government and financial services discussed the UK's strengths in green finance, innovative capital markets, and the new National Wealth Fund (NWF) as a catalyst for private investment. We look forward to continued collaboration between investors and the government.
The UK does not have the fiscal capacity to replicate the US Inflation Reduction Act – but what it does have is deep and innovative #GreenFinance expertise and capital markets capability. It also has a strong green industrial policy agenda and a new catalytic enabler of private investment, in the form of the National Wealth Fund (NWF). With investors and the government working in partnership to deliver economic growth through investment in green industry, the UK is well-positioned to take the lead globally on a pathway to transition that will drive real-economy change. We were delighted to welcome leaders from across government and financial services to discuss Renewing Britain’s Leadership on the Green Transition at an event which highlighted the UK’s renewed focus on enabling policy measures to deliver domestic growth through catalysing private investment into the economy. Thank you especially to Carol Young Universities Superannuation Scheme (Ltd) Paul Thwaite NatWest Group Caroline S. We are delighted to be involved with IFM Investors’ important blueprint “Mobilising pension capital for net zero: a policy blueprint for the UK.” This initiative is a contribution by a host of the UK and Australia’s leading pension funds, representing £1.7trn in workers’ retirement savings, to help enable crowding in pension capital at scale to accelerate the UK's energy transition. Our CEO, Carol Young, said “Used well, the policy options offer the opportunity of better aligning pension scheme interests and capital with the Government’s net zero ambitions.” Access here: https://lnkd.in/e3CwH9eU #Pensions #Infrastructure #EnergyTransition Border To Coast Pensions Partnership LGPS Central Nest pensions Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association Universities Superannuation Scheme (Ltd) Aware Super Cbus Super Fund HESTA Rest Hostplus CareSuper
