It’s an exciting time of year as we welcome all our new and returning students to The Manchester Metropolitan University. Earlier, I spoke on BBC Breakfast and Radio 5 Live about the importance of universities and their value to the country. Universities remain a key part in driving social mobility and economic growth, both locally and nationally. The sector contributes an enormous amount to the UK economy, with £14 back for every £1 invested. A university degree offers good value and an earnings premium, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who gain the most. Universities are essential in fuelling innovation, driving economic growth, and enriching society in countless ways. But UK universities face unprecedented challenges in sustaining these missions. It’s no surprise that universities across the country are experiencing financial pressures from the frozen domestic fee, balancing this with their commitment to accessibility and excellence. With a new government, we face an opportunity to reassess the funding arrangements of the HE sector, including maintenance grants to students who struggle with living costs. Universities UK will soon be publishing recommendations for the future of the HE sector, and I look forward to continuing the conversation on the financial arrangements of our beloved institutions. Working together, we can find a solution that ensures our universities remain world leading and give young people life-changing opportunities that are open to all. Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to Find a University's Postgraduate conference to speak about our 100 faces campaign. It was a great experience to be able to hear from talented marketing and communications professionals across the sector and to share my experiences.

I am a little late to post, as usual, but had a great time at the UUK annual conference chatting with Katy Balls, Political Editor of the Spectator on all things politics, new government, October budget, and, this very, very long Tory leadership contest!

Last week we hosted the Universities UK Annual conference at the University of Reading. This year saw contributions from the DG of MI5, the Minister for Skills and the SoS for DSIT along side a host of other sessions from inside and outside of the sector. It’s a conference that takes a huge collective effort from across the organisation to deliver but I want to give a special shout out to our wonderful events team, Esther Batambuze, Magdalena Graszka, Savanna Patel, Symone B and Jacob Glass for making it all happen. It takes an awful lot of energy (see photo for where this energy is sourced) but they do it fantastically.
