Scientists based at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory are over the moon with the development of a new simulation that will help robots collect lunar dust! Moon dust contains a variety of valuable resources such as oxygen and remote handling will be key to analysing the material further. Their paper will be presented by lead author Joe Louca and team at this year's IROS 2024 (IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems). Last week we had the pleasure of joining our fourth-year MEng students on a field trip to the Clifton Suspension Bridge to observe its multi-million-pound refurbishment by Taziker 🌉 The project, which began in Spring, includes a new paint system for the bridge’s chain links, parapet stanchions, and lattice work, as well as the installation of modern architectural lighting to further accentuate this landmark structure. During the trip, students saw firsthand the challenges of refurbishing heritage structures, including the complexity of accessing the site, maintaining historical integrity, and minimising disruption to the bridge's daily use. Field trips like this give our students an invaluable real-world experience, and we’re fortunate to have such remarkable case studies right on our doorstep. #CivilEngineering #CliftonSuspensionBridge #Engineering

It’s a privilege to be able to support and welcome WildDrone doctoral students and collaborators to University of Bristol / University of Bristol Engineering and to be coordinating their training throughout their PhDs. Looking forward to impact through their and our work!
This week, the WildDrone Consortium convened in Bristol for an engaging series of workshops, discussions, thematic meetings, and media training sessions. Hosted at the University of Bristol, Fenswood Farm Robotics Centre, and the BBC Studios, this gathering set the stage for our upcoming field trip to Kenya in January 2025 🛸✈️ In addition to exploring topics like ethics, computer vision, and drone implementation, the week provided an excellent opportunity for networking during our evening social program, where innovative ideas for cross-disciplinary collaboration emerged 💫 The WildDrone Consortium will train 13 doctoral candidates, integrating expertise in drone technology, computer vision, biology, and wildlife ecology. Our aim is to develop practical tools for visual inspection and monitoring of wildlife populations, behaviors, and habitats in complex environments such as the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. A big thank you to all who contributed to making this week a success, including all DCs, supervisors, management, project partners, and administrative staff. Together, we're transforming wildlife conservation practices—one step at a time 🦒🙏 #WildDroneEU #HorizonEU #MSCA #WildlifeConservation
