About us
We're not called Unusual Rigging for nothing. We've been around since 1983 and while none of our work could be referred to as run of the mill, we do find ourselves involved with some really challenging projects. At any given time we may be refurbishing the flying system of a century old theatre, hanging unique artworks in one of London's famous museums, flying scenery in a West End show or designing dare-devil experiments for prime-time TV. Using our combined experience we design and source the best solutions, whether it's for a major international event or a small, regional project with equal dedication.

My #sustainable #buildings road trip continues... yesterday I had the pleasure of a tour of Unusual Rigging's amazing head office by Tom Harper. This is an inspiring example of a #netzero building achieved by energy and water efficiency, regenerative design (i.e. cradle to cradle) and #Passivhaus principles (i.e. air tightness, super insulation, triple glazing, minimising/eliminating thermal bridges, heat recovery mechanical ventilation etc). This beautiful building really showcases what a sustainable built environment can look like when approached with the right motivations and team behind each project. My sincere thanks to Tom for this personal tour and for a really interesting discussion.

We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with an outstanding team of businesses and individuals to bring Global Citizen's Move Afrika to the stage. More than that we are so proud that this year's event include Rwanda's first four full time riggers in the show's production crew. These are guys that we at Unusual, in conjunction with Rwanda Events, worked with to up-skill and provide the necessary training. So proud of the team who worked on Move Afrika: Kigali w John Legend. We set out to build capacity in the local creative sector to deliver a world-class show with a local Rwandan crew. Since the show w Kendrick Lamar in Dec ‘23, we increased the proportion of local crew from 75% in 2023 to 90% Specifically, we progressed: - Technical Production: Thanks to Rwanda Events Group Ltd, locally sourced audio control increased from 50% to 95%, lighting from 40% to 95%, and video crew from 33% to 75%. - Tech training. Local crewmembers worked with international technical teams from Production Resource Group, John Henry's Ltd. and Solotech Inc. on equipment preparation and maintenance. - Set and Stage: we showcased Rwandan creative excellence w artist Dolph Banza returning to design a new set of stage backdrops evoking traditional Kitenge fabric designs. And, 20 artisans from the NYAMIRAMBO WOMEN'S CENTER crafted traditional Agaseke peace baskets to hang across the stage as dynamic lighting fixtures. - Hospitality and Events Trainees: we expanded our partnership with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, increasing the number of young people trained to support the event from 35 to 50. These young adults received training and shadowed Global Citizen and partner crews, gaining work experience in areas of event production and hospitality, aligned to their areas of interest. - First Aid and Security: This was the first event in Rwanda to be staffed by local private security who have received accredited First Aid training, thanks to a bespoke course delivered by our Safety & Security team to over 100 staff of local private security firm Crowd Minders. Additionally, 45 event supervisors, managers and pit supervisors received specialist security training from Cohort Security Group Ltd in line with international standards for the first time in Rwanda, including audience and team management, behavioural observation and audience communication. - Venue and Rigging: Following innovations and upgrades made to the BK Arena for Move Afrika in 2023, QA Venue Solutions worked in partnership with Momentum and Fortem to complete a structural survey to ascertain the arena’s true weight capacity for the rigging of event equipment. As a result, this year’s Move Afrika production saw the BK Arena operate at full production capabilities as a true multi-purpose venue. Additionally, the show production crew included Rwanda’s first four full-time riggers, who have received upskilling support and training from Rwanda Events in partnership with Unusual Rigging over the past year. - Production Crew Student Training: As part of Rwanda Events Group’s in-house capacity-building program, 14 students successfully completed a six-month introductory training program. Six of them continued on to work directly on the production of tonight’s event, aligned to Move Afrika’s commitment to skill development, on the job training, and growth opportunities for the next generation.

When we were brought on board by Cameron Mackintosh to handle the rigging for the new production of Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre, we knew 𝘄𝗲’𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 to come up with a creative solution to the challenges of the production and its new home. From designing and installing additional hanging beams above the old wooden grid to support the flown bridge, to supporting large and heavy set pieces including an LED screen, the team led by Emily Egleton had its work cut out. Unusual Rigging was thrilled to fly the flag (quite literally) for Her Majesty the Queen Camilla’s visit to Mulberry Academy London Dock earlier this week. We supplied the school with a counterweight demo system, allowing students to gain an insight into the world of live production. I haven't spoken about this project for a while but it is one that we keep referring back to in our work. It is an example of true innovation, and actually building and delivering it, putting Circular Economy theory into practice. As I reflect on the project my main takeaway would be to not try and wait for that 'perfect' solution, it doesn't exist. Every project has scope to take steps in the right direction, and every step (big or small) is worth it. What a pleasure to see our fabulous new HQ and research centre on the pages of one of the leading architectural publications - the Architects' Journal. Thanks to our wonderful architects, @corstorphinewright, we have a pioneering building which perfectly demonstrates the Unusual commitment to a circular economy. When we began this project, we were keen to ensure that the finished building embodied everything about sustainability and the environment that we are so passionate about and we have not been disappointed. We’ve just completed a project at Vanguard Self Storage new facility in Bath. The state of the art facility offers 45,000 sq. ft. of storage over four floors. We were asked to install a beautifully restored De Havilland Vampire T11 in the atrium. The aircraft is a British Fighter jet, first used by the RAF as a trainer - the first advanced jet fighter to have side by side seating. The prototype first flew in 1943 and remained in service until 1966.
