Today we proudly launch our VIY Impact Report for 2023–24, a snapshot of our impact and growth. Collaboration is in our DNA - it's thanks to our dedicated team and more cross-sector partners than ever before that we're able to deliver wider, deeper, more sustainable impact for young people and local communities. From our national partners, who help underpin everything we do, to our purpose and place-based programme partners and local project supporters, we’re all fuelled by the same impact goals and objectives; to boost the life chances, employability and wellbeing of young people, and help local community spaces become more inclusive, accessible and sustainable. ✨ Feel Good Friday - meet George ✨ We're currently rounding up our work across the country working with many different councils and local authorities through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, helping local communities and residents restore pride in their places and helping young people to gain vital skills and boost their employability. Below Simon Hanson has really summed up the impact VIY has made - not just through our work with Gateshead Council, but across the country on both young people like George, but the places that mean the most to local communities. Update: George has now been invited by Go North East to visit their bus depot and take a step further to working in the transport industry ☺️ Roll on 2025/26 in Gateshead and beyond! #SomethingConstructive #UKSPF #YouthEmployment #CommunityImpact
Curious about new models of public service delivery | Heading up a new Economic Development and Delivery Unit at Gateshead Council | Developing a new mission based approach
Supporting local communities and residents has been one of our key UKSPF priorities. Through the projects that have been funded since 2022 we’ve seen a massive difference across Gateshead. It was great to visit the Teams Life Centre to see the impact that VIY has made in supporting people who are disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training, at risk of disengagement or unemployed. The people supported by Volunteer It Yourself are mentored by professional tradespeople and can gain Entry Level City & Guilds accreditations, as well as access to further training, work-readiness and employment opportunities. During the visit we were given a tour of the project by George (in the orange high viz vest) who is one of the young people supported through the project. It was one of the best tours of a building I’ve ever had. George told us about the work being done, the background to the mural being painted, and how the Centre supports the local community. George would like to be a bus driver in the future which he’ll be brilliant at. One to watch Go North East. Thanks to Matt Mellor and the wider VIY team for the cracking work that you have done in Gateshead. There’s a lot of young people you’ve helped that will go on to fulfil their ambitions. We're really looking forward to getting going on our next collaborative project with Tawd Valley Developments Limited, following on from other successful projects in Skelmersdale. Great work by Danny Hawkins and our team up in the North West - take a read of what we'll be up to in our next collaboration whilst supporting students from West Lancashire College ⬇️ Doing #SomethingConstructive to deliver true #SocialValue at its finest, also in partnership with the #UKSPF.
So many vital community assets are lost due to rising costs and income challenges so with a number of our professional partners, at no cost, TVD is orchestrating the refurbishment of the Liverpool Road Mission Hall in Skelmersdale. The building, opened in 1892, has seen many uses from a Church to a Sunday School to a venue for performances and is set to undergo a major refurbishment. Thanks to funding from Whitemoss Community Fund, administered through Veolia Environmental Trust, #TheLCF and UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The Mission Hall now provides a vital community resource hosting activities for adults such as table tennis, pilates and keep fit, as well as children's dance and theatre, self defence and Scouts and Beavers. The works will include improvements to the drainage, new toilets and storage, an improved kitchen, pathways, disabled access and repairs to the roof and windows. The professional team providing their support at no cost are #WhitfieldandBrown Developments, #JohnMcCall Architects and #Ridge and Partners alongside #TawdValleyDevelopments. The works will be managed by national charity #VIY who will engage with students from #WestLancashireCollege to undertake some of the work tasks under supervision. Some of the components will be provided at reduced cost including a brand-new state of the art kitchen provided by #Howdens. Works start this week! A massive thanks to all.

We were delighted to be invited to the City & Guilds parliamentary drop-in session today celebrating our national skills partnership - hosted in the beautiful Terrace Pavilion. It was great to meet other regional and national organizations doing brilliant work to support people with skills development, like @OnSide developing the next youth work leaders in their outstanding youth zones. People progressing into positive outcomes through the wonderful City & Guilds Foundation and seeing the real social value of City & Guilds registered learners, their outcomes and the value to their local economy - in the billions 💷. Great to hear from Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith and sponsor for the event MP for West Ham & Beckton, James Asser - reaffirming the national need and drive for skills as the powerhouse for economic growth, particularly in construction. We're right here, doing #SomethingConstructive all over the country to help plug this gap, engaging, inspiring and equipping young people with the City & Guilds stepping stone accreditation into the sector, whilst delivering even more social value through vital community renovations to enable this too - here's to 2025 and beyond! Social-prescribing in many forms is a product of our work here at VIY. 🎨 Many of our young people often comment how therapeutic they find learning to paint whilst seeing their hard work come to life - just like this beautiful design we worked with Pickle Illustration on below, or seeing a wall go from tired and dull to sparkly and bright (thanks to our friends at Dulux every time 😏) 🎨 🍃 We create green and 'blue' outdoor spaces nominated by organisations like Natural England or in partnership with Sport England and Paddle UK helping people on social-prescribing programmes to access nature, water and other physical activity designed to boost wellbeing 💦 ✨ Working with young people who are referred to us through social-prescribing or other mental health plans - 89% of our young learners last year felt happier and with improved wellbeing after volunteering with VIY ✨ We'd love to work with more organisations for whom social-prescribing is part of what you do, or with young people looking for alternative activities to boost their wellbeing or mental health. Get in touch via info@teamviy.com. Thanks Olivia Collins for sparking a brilliant conversation here! #SocialPrescribing #Wellbeing #SomethingConstructive
Art as medicine! 💊✨ Art and creativity are powerful tools in improving both physical and mental health and many doctors are now actively prescribing it to their patients. Social prescribing, as its named, is described as a way that ‘connects people to activities, groups, and services in their community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs that affect their health and wellbeing’.(nhs.com) So what ways can we at Pickle Illustration use our design practice to create positive change in the world of social prescribing? Often the work we create begins with community led consultation which includes elements of interactive learning, therapeutic expression and collaboration. This happens through workshops, joint murals, activity trails plus many more creative activities. Below include a few images of our works that we have been involved in over the years which have provided benefits for wellbeing, learning new skills and improving employment opportunities for young people. Included is a fulfilling project at the The Bradby Youth Club in Rugby where we worked alongside VIY to design and paint a bold and playful design at a youth club. The murals were painted in collaboration with young people which helped them learn skills for their future, supported by Dulux , Travis Perkins, Toolstation and Sports England . We have also created many activity trails encouraging people to get out of the house and spend more time in nature. These include our works for Summer of Play with the National Trust as well as our collaboration with Creative Futures and University of Warwick to create a ’Sensory Stroll’ in Christchurch gardens in Leamington Spa. To see more of our projects you can head to our website pickleillustration.com and if you’d like to chat to us about a creative idea you might have our email is pickleillustration@gmail.com

❤️ We 🩷 Partnerships! ❤️ This Valentine’s Day, we’re showing some love to our partners who not only help make our projects a possibility, through the donation of materials, volunteering on site alongside our young people and match-funding, but who are also driven to build the next generation of tradespeople, and build brighter futures for young people. ⚒️ From National Partners like City & Guilds | Dulux | Keepmoat Homes | Morgan Sindall Construction | People's Postcode Lottery | Places for People | The National Lottery Community Fund | Toolstation & Travis Perkins, to youth organisations supporting young people, to regional employers and local training programmes, to Team VIY on the ground nationwide, it takes a team effort to do #SomethingConstructive to build brighter futures together, one person and project at a time. 💘 Without this collaborative approach, young people wouldn’t have the chance to explore careers in construction, take their skills to the next level, and get involved in #NationalApprenticeshipWeek. Let’s keep the love (and the projects) going strong! 💪 Check out our huge range of cross-sector partners who help us do what we do. Want to talk about how we could work together on your #SocialValue or #Apprenticeship plans? Let's talk: info@teamviy.com. https://lnkd.in/ePrK3zDC

Empowering the next generation this #NationalApprenticeshipWeek ⚒️ Shantelle, a learner from our project at Gabalfa Community Centre in Cardiff last year, is a perfect example of how we provide hands-on work experience before progressing into further education/training and eventually, potentially an apprenticeship. In this video, Shantelle shares how VIY helped her gain real-world experience and build the skills needed for a successful apprenticeship in the construction industry 📽️ Our projects serve as mini-apprenticeships, allowing NEET/at risk young people to be mentored by professional tradespeople, developing practical skills that not only start or prepare them for further training in construction, but also their confidence & self-esteem, even in front of a camera! Big thanks to our employer partners like Barclays for helping to create these opportunities, as part of their commitment to teach life skills to young people👏 #NationalApprenticeshipWeek https://lnkd.in/eGgZeERr

Leon’s journey with VIY - a stepping stone to construction ⚒️ 🎓 In celebration of #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we’re proud to highlight Leon’s journey. A young learner who took part in a VIY project at Anchorians Sports Club*, is a perfect example of how VIY opens doors to the construction industry. After recently passing his Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) with support from VIY's Progressions Team, he’s now moving into a trial with Luke Godden, a VIY Volunteer Mentor and owner of LG Decorating, with the hope of securing an apprenticeship. 📌 This journey highlights how VIY serves as a stepping stone for young people to explore construction, discover new pathways they may never have considered, and realise the vast potential within the industry, as well as building their own confidence, self-esteem and belief in a bright future. 👩🔧 VIY projects provide more than just hands-on experience - they connect learners to apprenticeship opportunities, paving the way for a successful career in construction. We’re proud to support learners like Leon, guiding them toward their next steps in the industry. Take a look at how we could support more young people you know or work with through our bitesize, hands-on work experiences here: https://lnkd.in/gAuDA3a4 #Apprenticeships #WorkExperience #Construction *A project co-funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with Medway Council and VIY Partners Continental and Sport England, with paint provided by Dulux
