About us

War Child was founded in 1993 in response to the war in the Balkans. Our belief remains the same today as it was then—no child should have their life destroyed by war. Children do not start wars but their families, homes, and schools—the very things they rely on for support and safety—continue to be destroyed by conflict. Children are not only at risk of being killed or injured but as communities flee and disperse, children often find themselves alone, traumatised, unable to continue their education and with no one to turn to. At War Child we understand these effects of conflict, which is why we focus our energies on helping and preventing the most vulnerable children from having their lives torn apart by the cycle of conflict, giving them a lifeline and a sense of hope for the future.

Ibrahim works in Gaza, on the frontlines of one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in the world: 🗣️ “What drives me to work in situations like these is this sense of responsibility to make a positive difference. It fills me with determination and perseverance to continue this challenging work, as it reflects the best aspects of our humanity. “I met three children separated from their families, including a young child with a physical disability. The toddler, who had difficulty moving, looked exhausted and full of fear. We provided them with psychological support, shelter and food and after, I witnessed a change. The little one began to feel secure and was able to interact with his surroundings.” Help us continue this life-saving work. Our staff and partners are doing all they can to help people in Gaza – despite immense challenges. Our Regional Director for the Middle East, Flutra Gorana, spoke with Voice of Islam about the risks faced by aid workers. She emphasised the urgency for governments and those with influence to do more to keep humanitarians safe, in Gaza and beyond. 🔗Sign our petition calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to protect the children of Gaza and insist aid agencies and their vital supplies be let into Gaza: https://bit.ly/4f3uvjx #ActForHumanity

Fifty years of armed conflict, natural and climate-related disasters have left children in Colombia vulnerable to recruitment by armed groups, gender-based violence, and displacement. Heidyz, a Protection and Gender Officer for War Child in Colombia, credits her father for her humanitarian spirit: “Having the opportunity to see all these different aspects of community has become an essential part of my drive to mobilise actions for social impact." 🤝 Through her role in our Mae Kiwe (Mother Earth) peacebuilding project, Heidyz is empowering young people - especially women - from Afro descendant and indigenous communities, to participate in decisions that shape their lives. "There are a lot of challenges, but I will persevere and contribute to a safe environment for the next generation.” 🔗 Find out more about our work in Colombia: https://bit.ly/3MhecST #WorldHumanitarianDay #ActForHumanity

Growing up with violence never far away, Fasco knew from an early age that he wanted to support children in his community. “I feel that I have the lived experience and skillset needed to support these children - as well as inspire them to realise their potential and become better people in the future. If not me, then who?” As a Child Protection Officer for War Child, Fasco lives in an internally displaced site in a town along the White Nile River in South Sudan. The site was set up to protect civilians following the outbreak of armed conflict in 2013. 🔗 You can find out more about child protection, and our other work in South Sudan, at: https://bit.ly/3VqXg0q #WorldHumanitarianDay #ActForHumanity

Yesterday was #WorldHumanitarianDay, and War Child representatives attended the Memorial Event for Humanitarian Aid Workers at Westminster Abbey, London. The humanitarian community, families and friends gathered to pay tribute to those who have been killed in the last year while working to support people affected by conflict and crises, and to celebrate the spirit that continues to inspire humanitarian action around the world. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. 2024 looks set to be even worse. We need those in power to #ActForHumanity to ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarians, in conflict zones.

Aid workers today are more at risk than ever before. Last year was the deadliest year on record, and with 176 already killed this year, 2024 already appears set to surpass this grim milestone. Yet, every day, these amazing individuals wake up, head out the door and put themselves at risk to make a difference in the lives of people in need. What drives them to do what they do? Stay tuned this week to hear from some of our incredible War Child staff. #WorldHumanitarianDay #ActForHumanity
