About us

War Child was founded in 1993 in response to the war in the Balkans. Our belief remains the same today as it was then—no child should have their life destroyed by war. Children do not start wars but their families, homes, and schools—the very things they rely on for support and safety—continue to be destroyed by conflict. Children are not only at risk of being killed or injured but as communities flee and disperse, children often find themselves alone, traumatised, unable to continue their education and with no one to turn to. At War Child we understand these effects of conflict, which is why we focus our energies on helping and preventing the most vulnerable children from having their lives torn apart by the cycle of conflict, giving them a lifeline and a sense of hope for the future.

🎂 Today is the anniversary of the release of HELP and Help! A Day In The Life - iconic albums created in support of War Child. The HELP album was recorded in a single day in 1995, appearing on shelves just five days later. Featuring greats of British music including Radiohead, Sinead O'Connor and Massive Attack, it even united Blur and Oasis on the same album. Oasis & Friends open the album with an acoustic version of "Fade Away". It sold more than 70,000 copies in a week, raising over £1.25M for children and families affected by the Balkan War. Ten years later, Help! A Day In The Life went one better. Also recorded in one day by Coldplay, Keane, Gorillaz, Emmanuel Jal and many more, it was available to download just 24 hours later. At the time it was the fastest album ever made! These albums have made a lasting impact on the lives of children affected by conflict. Today is International Day of Charity and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who makes our work possible - our incredible local partners and War Child staff in areas affected by conflict, the children and families we work with, and of course, you - our generous and committed funders and supporters. However you support us - whether you've organised a fundraiser or signed our petition, come to one of our gigs or made a donation - without you, we couldn't do what we do to protect, educate, and stand up for the rights of children living through war. Thank you ❤️

We welcome the UK government's announcement of a partial ban on arms exports to Israel, given the clear risk that they could be used to violate international humanitarian law in Gaza. This is progress. But with 1.1 million children in urgent need of humanitarian aid, the government must keep pushing for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. 🔗 Please keep making your voices heard: sign and share our petition: https://bit.ly/4f3uvjx #ceasefireNOW

When fighting reached her hometown in South Sudan, 12-year-old Adit’s life changed forever: “Because of the war, we had to run. The rebels came and stole all our things.” At War Child, we work in often overlooked conflict zones, ensuring those affected by ongoing crises get the support they need. In South Sudan, we are working with vulnerable children to help regain their sense of safety, community, and hope. Adit has joined our award-winning TeamUp programme, which uses movement-based activities like dance and sport to bring children together to relieve stress, regulate emotions, and process trauma. ❤️ Thanks to the players of People's Postcode Lottery, we can continue to work in conflicts that have long been forgotten, ensuring children like Adit get the care they need to thrive. 🔗Read Adit's story: https://bit.ly/471aXsq

Ibrahim works in Gaza, on the frontlines of one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in the world: 🗣️ “What drives me to work in situations like these is this sense of responsibility to make a positive difference. It fills me with determination and perseverance to continue this challenging work, as it reflects the best aspects of our humanity. “I met three children separated from their families, including a young child with a physical disability. The toddler, who had difficulty moving, looked exhausted and full of fear. We provided them with psychological support, shelter and food and after, I witnessed a change. The little one began to feel secure and was able to interact with his surroundings.” Help us continue this life-saving work.
