News and updates on how we're building a better connected, more prosperous, fairer, greener and healthier West Midlands.

About us

These are exciting times. Growth is strong and optimism is high. Our region is at the forefront of change and we are the place to be in the UK. West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has been created to deliver an ambitious plan to drive inclusive economic growth in the West Midlands region and build a healthier, happier, better connected and more prosperous population. Made up of 18 local authorities and three Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and chaired by the Mayor of the West Midlands, WMCA is working together to move powers from Whitehall to the West Midlands and its locally elected politicians, who know this region best. This is a place determined to make its mark, and it is succeeding. The West Midlands’ magnificent past drives the region’s future. Its cities are built on industry and are now perfectly positioned to re-invent the industrial revolution for the future. This is a place built on social connection, collaboration and progress. Key priorities include transport; productivity and skills; housing and regeneration; industrial strategy; finance and investment and public service reform. We are a region on the move. Our time is now.

👋  This week we welcomed Baroness Jones to our Birmingham Knowledge Quarter, part of the West Midlands Investment Zone.    📈 Birmingham Knowledge Quarter has a bold vision to create over 19,000 new jobs, drive £100bn growth in GVA, support new pathways to skills for all of the region’s communities and through initiatives such as the regional Innovation Accelerator.   🗣 Baroness Jones commented on her visit: "The Labour Government has put economic growth at the heart of its mission for national renewal. But that has to be growth which benefits all of our communities – not just a few lucky ones. "Birmingham Knowledge Quarter is a brilliant example of partners pulling together to drive innovation, create new business opportunities and develop the technical skills the country needs to make our ambitions a reality." • Kamaria is an inspiration 🥰 She dreamed of becoming a therapist but struggled to get the grades she needed in her GCSEs. Then her world was turned upside down when she was told she had breast cancer at the age of 25. Determined to win her cancer battle and live life to full, she juggled her treatment and recovery with retaking her maths and English GCSEs to help with her Access to Higher Education Diploma course. And now aged 29 she's off to Uni 🎉 Her advice to people getting their results: "Going through cancer treatment made me even more determined to achieve my goal. "You may not have the grades you need but you can retake and look into other routes you can pursue to get to where you want to be." Amazing 👏

  • 🗣 "Absolutely gutted."   That’s how Victoria felt after failing her A-Levels. But unfazed, she took another path including taking part in an exchange programme abroad.    🤩 Now she’s working in her dream job, doing an apprenticeship in project management.     Whatever your exam results, there’s something out there for you – there are many paths to success.

  • We hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the wide-ranging impact of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Impact Fund (CWGLEF) to the West Midlands. Over the past few weeks we've been highlighting just a handful of the many projects from across the region that we've supported to mark the two-year anniversary of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The CWGLEF draws to a close in March 2025. We will keep celebrating the fantastic events, initiatives and projects that have come about due to funding from the UK Government, including Birmingham hosting the European Athletics Championship in 2026.
