Did you know that some wetland birds carry their young on their back until they’re old enough to swim on their own? Floatation is key for little grebes, who are truly waterbirds, spending most of their time as adults in the water. Their nests are even built to float using twigs and vegetation found nearby. Wetland parenting is an incredible sight, and it reminds us of all the amazing mums out there. Happy Mother's Day! #Wetlands #MothersDay #LittleGrebe #Grebe

Have you spotted these wetland residents yet? 🔍 You might have seen kingfisher pairs excavating their holes in the riverbanks, frogspawn appearing in the pond, or the aerial artistry of a marsh harrier trying to impress a potential mate. Spring is arriving on the wetlands. 🌻 #Wetlands #BirdWatching #Kingfisher #Frogs #MarshHarrier

“The time for saltmarsh is now.” Why? Because it’s powerful stuff! Between 2014 and 2020, WWT Steart Marshes is estimated to have stored a whopping 24,678 tonnes of organic carbon. In December, American conservation news platform Mongabay joined Site Manager Alys Laver and Reserve Warden Sam Wall to discover Steart Marshes’ incredible journey from farmland to wetland – taking in all its carbon sucking, flood busting and nature boosting benefits along the way! Did you know that spending time near water can reduce stress and improve your mood in as little as 10 minutes? 💧 That’s why we’ve teamed up with WWT and Flock Together this World Water Day to highlight the importance of water and how wetlands enable species from around the world to thrive. We LOVE water and the incredible people who protect it, that’s why we’re proud to be part of WWT’s Blue Recovery Fund. This initiative brings individuals and businesses together with one shared vision – to create and restore UK wetlands for nature, people, and the climate. Together, we’ll create over 100,000 hectares of new wetland habitats (the equivalent of 140,000 football pitches) to conserve fresh water and protect wildlife. 🤝 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/efF9ZW_p #WorldWaterDay #Wellbeing #Water

Last week Secretary of State Steve Reed had the chance to stand up for wildlife and choose a lead-free future – but we’re still waiting on a decision. This marks yet another disappointing delay in the decision to #BanLead ammunition – but there’s still time for the government to save thousands of waterbirds. More delays will mean more unnecessary deaths – we’ve made it clear this is unacceptable. Keep the pressure up here >>> https://lnkd.in/d_r-u6jD

You might have heard us talking about lead ammunition a lot lately. But how did we get here? Why in 2025, is 7,000 tonnes of lead ammunition still being scattered across the environment each year? At this critical moment for wildlife and communities, we wanted to tell this story through the people at WWT who’ve been fighting for wetlands and wildlife every step of the way. 👉 https://lnkd.in/edXJADpQ #Conservation #Wetlands
