Global experts agree that one of the biggest keys to ending extreme poverty is to invest in the development of girls. Without girls, breaking the cycle of generational poverty isn't possible. Sponsorship opens the doors to a world of possibility for girls – not just for them, but for their entire community. ✴️ Here are four reasons why > https://bit.ly/3Ygbl3q #DayoftheGirl #InternationalDayoftheGirl

Nearly half of the world's population are women and girls, yet in 2024 too many are forced into harsh realities, just because of their gender. Statistics can be daunting, but what if the world was just 1,000 girls? Hundreds would be married as children and forced to quit school. Many would be subjected to forced sex and the harmful, violent practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Dozens would be child labourers and too many would be victims of human trafficking. Imagine a world where this is not the reality. Where girls can live free from fear, have their voices heard and their rights protected. It’s possible. But it takes you. It takes all of us. Join the movement to sponsor #1000Girls and fight for their rights and futures. Sponsor a girl today > https://bit.ly/3RPzacH

⚠️ Sensitive content warning: This story includes an experience of r*pe and violence involving a child. The child’s name has been changed to protect their identity. Miriam was only 12 years old when she was r*ped by her uncle. She knew it was wrong but when she spoke out, only her mother believed her, and she too was thrown out of the community. The stigma in her community was so bad, Miriam began living in fear every day, wondering about young girls in her community. “When we speak, it’s as if no one will hear us, so we have to stay with our problems. We feel like no one is concerned, no one loves us, we feel we are nothing.” When she came to a rescue centre that provides a home for children who need it, Miriam became a sponsored child. Though her childhood has been traumatic, sponsorship is helping to change her life and future for the better. “Now, where I am today as a girl, I can speak. I can speak about the issue and I can help other girls,” she says. Right now, 1000 girls like Miriam are taking a stand against the threats and barriers they face, just because they are girls. Will you stand with them? Sponsor a girl by 11 October, International Day of the Girl, to give #1000Girls back their futures > https://bit.ly/3RPzacH
