Bras should be exempt from VAT because they are essential for women's health! I am in full support of the society of Radiographers who are arguing this week in conference that bras should be exempt from VAT because they are essential for women's health. Radiographers believe we should get rid of the tax on bras because it 'disproportionately affects women" and therefore goes against the Equality Act 2010. Some bras today can cost over £80 and so this could be a big difference for women when shopping for a good quality bra. It is even more important for women with bigger chests, as they need more support and must choose a hybrid or encapsulation style which usually comes in on the costly end of the scale when bra shopping. By getting rid of the VAT on bras, it could encourage more women to purchase good quality and appropriate bras for their everyday wear and sport. It could also make them think twice to replace them more often. Poorly fitting sports bras have been proven to reduce athletic performance, and lack confidence in girls with feelings of insecurity and reducing participating in sport. Not wearing the correct support during physical activity can also cause tissue damage and back pain. We must remove the barriers to get girls and women moving whatever their breast size, and educate them about the importance and brilliant possibilities in life when wearing a good bra! #thisgirlcan #womeninsport #health #sportsbra #keepherconfident #bra #equalityact

Invest in Women.  Like many, I don't believe one day is enough to spotlight the changes that need to happen to ensure women's safety and gender parity around the world.  However, IWD is still an important way to remind us what needs to be done to raise voices of women who would not be heard otherwise. There is still a lot of work to be done.   We must continue to, 1. Celebrate women and their achievements  2. Educate and raise awareness on women's equality 3. Action for positive change investing in women #internationalwomensday #inspireinclusion #womensupportingwomen

The first sports bra was invented in 1977 and named the Jog-Bra.

The sports bra has come a long way since it’s first invention, the Jog-Bra in 1977, when Lisa Lindahl, Hinda Miller and Polly Smith decided to sew two jockstraps together. Their original requirements for the bra: Slip-free straps, chafe-free hardware, but most importantly; to be able to run in the bra without a shirt on. Today, a shocking 46% of girls reported that their breasts affected their sports and exercise participation according to Women in Sport, it’s a time where girls self-confidence is at an all time low. Come to think of it, I’m 34-years-old, and on a hot summers day I know I would think twice before going for a run in just my sports bra. Catcalling, staring, my nipples peeping through my bra, anxiety and self confidence would go through the roof, and I know I’m not alone. We are not yet living in Barbieland, in fact far from it. Having said that, it’s not all bad. The moment in the 2022 Euros when Chloé Kelly ripped off her top in victory in front of a sold out stadium to show off her white Nike bra went down in history and has been forever etched in my mind. We all remember it. And since that moment, the numbers of girls participation in sport has risen dramatically. Kelly, if she wasn’t before, has become our role model, which is exactly what every young girl needs, isn’t it? 'Support' is a great word. A sports bra does exactly that. It supports your breasts so you can run and be your absolute best. And thats exactly what our future genetation of girls need today too. Support. Someone to lay the path, someone to look up to. My daughter of six months very well might be the next Chloe Kelly. She’s young I know, but I’ve seen her hand to eye coordination as she wrestles me when I try to put on a new nappy. I want my daughter to live in a world where if she scores a goal on sports day (or in a sold out stadium) she doesn’t even think twice to rip off her shirt in celebration and confidence. Or when it’s 30 degrees in August, I, her mother, in 2024 want to run outside in just my sports bra and feel comfortable and safe to do so. We need to get that confidence back, make it the norm and show our future generation the support they need. Because back in 1977, when the sports bra was originally invented, running in the bra without a t-shirt on was exactly what it was intended for. -------------------------------------------------- Please check out and follow You're the Breast! This Girl Can have reported that around 80% of girls are missing PE due to low body confidence, as it can have a HUGE impact on their relationship with exercise. One of the reasons for girls lacking in confidence is their changing body during puberty. Some of the earliest physical changes of puberty in girls is breast development. Girls can begin to develop around the age of 8 up to 11-years-old, (it's also possible earlier or later than this too.) Breasts will grow at different rates and it's totally normal for one breast to be bigger than the other. It's important to understand and educate girls about the signs of when their breasts are developing, it could be one or all of the following... ❌ feeling sore of tender in the chest area ❌ unexplained backache ❌ itchiness around the nipples Wearing a sports bra has been proven to majorly impact a girl when doing physical activity in the following ways, ✅ prevent back pain, as well as in the neck and shoulders ✅ reduce breast pain as it's developing ✅ improve performance during physical activity as it will reduce breast bounce Reducing breast bounce will improve confidence and prevent embarrassment around breast development. 📣Calling all PE Teachers and parents ! It's time we educate young girls on breast development and sports bras to ensure girls have a positive experience in taking part in PE lessions and overcome the barriers they are facing. Every girl deserves to feel confident in their body 💪 #breasteducation #education #educationforgirls #womensupportingwomen #physicalactivity #schools #womeninsport #thisgirlcan #puberty #schoolgirls #keepherconfident

Sports Bras vs Trainers When are we going to start understanding that wearing a good sports bra is just as important as a good pair of trainers when running. It's time girls are educated about sports bras and know that they have a huge choice out there of different styles, impact levels, models and sizes. Wearing the right supportive sports bra will give school girls confidence during PE and will lead to more girls participating in sport in the future. #sportsbra #education #schoolgirls #health #pekit #physicalactivity #highschools #breasteducation #knowledgeispower #womensupportingwomen Women in Sport Women in Sports Youth Sport Trust England Athletics Women's Running 261 Fearless Inc Fearless Women Maratona This Girl Can Studio You Simon Besnard

“All you need is a good pair of running shoes!” I can't tell you how many running blogs I've read with that advice as a starting point for new runners. And I wish I could say they were all written by men.  Let me tell you, if you are a woman, a good sports bra is just as necessary as a good pair of trainers. So why is it that today, we are in 2024 and still not treating sports bras on the same level of importance as running shoes? I started the rollercoaster entrepreneur life with my husband Simon Besnard four years ago when we created our sportswear brand Maratona. My husband being the sales department spent the most part of 2022 traveling around the entire North West of France, visiting every sports shop he could pinpoint on google maps. Did you know that 90% of sports shops in France have male owners. And 50% of these sports shops stock just one model of sports bra. Just one. Simon would walk into each shop, and make his “dragons den” style pitch with our Maratona sports bra. "We've already got a sports bra." the owners say. Can you imagine if this was the case for running shoes. We've already got a sports shoe, no need for another.” Yes, it sounds absolutely ridiculous, and would never be the case. "There's just no demand for sports bras here." the owner would continue to say. Well of course there isn't. There's no choice. And if there's no choice, female runners are obviously going elsewhere to find their sports bras. Online probably. Every running shop you walk into here in France has at least one wall, if not two covered in shoes. About 10 different brands of trainers, with five to six models per brand. So that’s 60 different models of shoes. Compared to one sports bra model. One. It’s only up until recently that we have started to sub-categorise sports bras, rather than thinking that one model is serving all. Sports shoes, we’ve been categorizing for decades, yes I’ve got a trail shoe and a road running shoe. Recently I looked up my old high school website, to see their sports PE kit. Beautifully embroidered polo shirts, shorts, down to even customized socks. However, I was utterly shocked (and a bit depressed) when the sports bra is literally at the bottom of the kit list, with a link to the local sports shop, and there’s a photo of an ugly white bandeau bra. I can see where the budget (and knowledge) ran out. I have a dream. Let me share it with you. I want to walk into a sports shop and see a wall full of sports bras. Categorized by different impact levels, different model designs, and different sizes. It’s time for women and girls to have the choice of sports bra. Just like we’ve had in sports shoes for so long now.  But if I could give you one piece of advice, it’s to be sure to find your right bra size. This is where education begins as still today 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Finding the right size is so important. Because you wouldn’t walk around all day in the wrong shoe size now would you?

Hi! I'm Sophie, creator of You're the Breast! I've been specialising in sports bras for the past four years. Over this time I have seen a shocking amount of women and girls who lack knowledge in breast education and sports bras. From confusion of finding the right size, to questions about sports bras impact levels and styles. There's a lot of info to take in! I believe sports bras should be available and encouraged to be worn by school girls, and breast education offered to girls aged 11-17 years old to learn more about their breast concerns. By empowering girls with knowledge, their body confidence, health and participation in PE can be greatly improved. #yourethebreast #bresteducation #education #sport #sportsbra #awareness #schoolgirls #girlsdeservebetter #bra #pe #physicalactivity #womensupportingwomen

Let’s talk about the practicalities of changing into a sports bra if you’re a younger girl. Ok, it’s easy if let’s say you’re at a leisure centre with separate cubicles, but what about the older venues? For example school changing rooms, or old locker rooms? Changing into a sports bra in a communal space for a self-concious girl getting used to her new sports bra isn’t ideal, or comfortable. Apart from knowing that she needs to get her sports bra on before the game, but does she have somewhere comfortable to change into it? This is where the magic of a good design sports bra comes in. What is she has a sports bra that she could wear all day on a day she has PE? A bra that has comfortable fabric, and is adjustable so she can pop it on first thing in the morning before she goes to school. This could be a game changer and help encourage girls to wear a sports bra for PE, and one less barrier to face before playing sport. What are you thoughts on this? #sportsbra #bra #gamechanger #breasteducationforall #education #sportequality #sportforgirls #girlsinsport #girlsinsportsbras #yourethebreast #breasteducation #lockerrooms #girlsdoingpe #physicalactivityandhealth #health

According to a survey by Women in Sport and STRONGER only a third of secondary school girls (aged 11-18 years old) wear a sports bra during PE. Why is this? -they simply don't own one -they can't afford one -it didn't cross their mind that they might need one during PE. It's 2024 and time to change this! We need more breast education in schools for girls to understand their changing bodies during puberty. There are a shocking amount of girls dropping out of sport due to body issues and lack of confidence. The accesssibility, education and knowledge of wearing a good sports bra would be a real game changer, it's time to bring breast education into schools. What are your thoughts on this? #education #educationforall #sport #sportsbra #support #physicaleducation #educationforgirls
