ICMA Women's Network

Financial Services

Networking. Progression. Support.

About us

ICMA has developed the ICMA Women’s Network (IWN) with the aim of pursuing the three goals noted above. It is on the same principles which ICMA differentiates itself in the European Capital Market that the ICMA Women’s Network differentiates itself from existing initiatives representing women in finance; as a cross-border, networking hub, with the potential to bring together like minded efforts of member firms. For stakeholders and participants, it provides access to a geographically-broad but ideologically-focused network, grounded firmly within a meaningful industry structure. IWN is aimed at professional women in the debt capital market in the intermediate stages of their career progression; the ‘pipeline’ into management/senior management. It also supports and aligns with the goals of ICMA members who wish to retain and promote women in their businesses.

ICMA - International Capital Market Association Women's Network France representative and Product Manager at Euroclear, Caroline Derocle, answered our questions about gender equality in the workplace. ❓ Greatest enabler for gender equality: 🎤 Setting up concrete objectives in terms of recruitment, representation at all levels including executive committees, promotions, compensation, training, etc… Commitment of top management is also key. ❓ How you’ve addressed gender inequality at your firm: 🎤 I always try to challenge gender biases in my day to day work whether in meetings, interactions with colleagues or hiring decisions. ❓ Main challenges for women in the period ahead: The gender pay gap, work-life balance, and, in some regions, barriers to accessing education, limiting their opportunities for personal and professional growth. ❓ Best advice you’ve received: 🎤 I will mention two : self-confidence in your skills and ability to progress, and making your work visible. ❓ Biggest passion outside of work: 🎤 I love to spend time with family and friends, to create strong links and memories. I also enjoy running and I participated in the Paris and New York marathons. ❓ The future for women in 3 words: 🎤 Empowerment, Equality, Influence. #IWN #WomensNetwork #ICMA #DEandI https://lnkd.in/dMx7Ge9

ICMA - International Capital Market Association Women's Network APAC representative and Executive Director, Global Markets Division at Crédit Agricole CIB, Desiree Sumilang, answered our questions about gender equality in the workplace. ❓ Greatest enabler for gender equality: 🎤 Supporting women and men with family aspirations and responsibilities. This support comes from leadership fostering an environment that promotes open communication, flexible working and the use of technology. ❓ How you’ve addressed gender inequality at your firm: 🎤 Beginning with an internally commissioned survey, my firm’s leadership has started a frank and open discussion globally to identify why the majority of women that begin their careers at the firm are not rising through the ranks to take up senior positions. ❓ Worst advice you’ve received: 🎤 I joined a London law firm despite advice from a professor who called it a “career killer” to work outside of my home country. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As someone who thrived in an international setting, it was perfect. ❓ Biggest passion outside of work: 🎤 My biggest passion outside of work is my family. My schedule before and after work revolves around three young children, starting at 6 am until bedtime. My other passion is to support the institutions that have enabled me to pursue the career that I have today. I do this by serving on the boards of my educational institutions and Allen & Overy. I am often the only Asian face, the only woman, the only American national or the only overseas person in a board meeting. As such, I feel a duty to be seen and heard on behalf of many others like me who are not present. ❓ The future for women in 3 words: 🎤 Visible. Empowered. Included. #IWN #WomensNetwork #ICMA #DEandI https://lnkd.in/dMx7Ge9

Chair of ICMA - International Capital Market Association's Market Infrastructure Advisory Group and Head of EMEA and APAC and CEO at MarketAxess, London, Christophe Roupie, answered our questions about gender equality in the workplace. ❓ Greatest enabler for gender equality: 🎤 A little less conversation, a little more action please! Action, not words, will be what drives us to true gender equality. Those in positions of power and influence will need to have the courage of their convictions. ❓ How you’ve addressed gender inequality at your firm: 🎤 Both top-down and bottom-up. We’ve actively recruited new female members of our board of directors and we've reshaped our recruitment processes to ensure absolute equality and diversity in our hiring. A special achievement has been the development of the Women at MarketAxess network, a global initiative offering female employees an opportunity to grow their network, develop skills and ultimately grow their careers. ❓ Main challenges for women in the period ahead: 🎤 The challenges ahead are no doubt the same as the challenges behind. Stereotypes, bias, intractable industry frameworks and expectations. ❓ Best/worst advice you’ve received: 🎤 Rather than answer this directly, I think I will just say this: In life we receive a lot of advice, not all of it wanted and not all of it good. I think the key is to follow your own advice and be your own best advocate for change. ❓ Biggest passion outside of work: 🎤 The unconditional love I have for my wife and my two boys, and their unconditional support for my professional life. It makes everything else much easier. ❓ Further actions that ICMA can take to promote gender balance: 🎤 The success of the IWN in the past 10 years has been phenomenal, growing from a small presence in the UK to thousands of members across multiple jurisdictions. Keep growing, numbers matter. #IWN #WomensNetwork #ICMA #DEandI https://lnkd.in/dMx7Ge9

The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day (on 10 October) is “it’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace”. Safeguarding the mental health of employees in the workplace is vital because of its impact on productivity, attendance and overall performance. When left untreated, the economic cost of mental illness is estimated by the WHO at US$1 trillion annually. Looking after ourselves and our people is also the morally right thing to do. In this ICMA Women's Network (IWN) event, our speaker Richard Martin, CEO of the Mindful Business Charter, will by reference to his own experience explore how to identify and manage our triggers, and what we can do to prioritise our mental health on a personal level. He will also explain how the Mindful Business Charter (MBC) supports firms at an organisational level to build best practices and remove unnecessary sources of stress in order to promote better mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. Finally, Rachael Forsberg (MBC) will share strategies on how simple, sustainable changes in our sleeping habits, diet and lifestyle can optimise our mood and contribute to our overall wellbeing. This in-person event is open to ICMA members and is free to attend. Please note that ICMA Women’s Network events are open to all genders, so we encourage female registrants to bring along a colleague of another gender.
