I was delighted to join Philippa Nuttall and Kathleen McLaughlin, Chief Sustainability Officer at Walmart, on a recent episode of the FT Sustainable Views podcast to discuss the pressing challenges of defining and managing Scope 3 emissions. I stressed that organisations must prioritize driving decarbonization in their own value chains. Doing that and doing it well can build more resilience in supply chains, drive operational efficiency, incentivise product innovation, and develop greater customer loyalty. However, decarbonisation alone is not enough. We’ve effectively surpassed the 1.5°C threshold, and must therefore combine value chain decarbonisation with large-scale carbon removal. This scale of removal will only be possible if we develop a viable payment mechanism for carbon removal – meaning high integrity carbon credits are essential. #Scope3 #ValueChainEmissions #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CarbonRemoval #CarbonCredits
Systemiq’s Managing Partner, Jeremy Oppenheim, recently joined Philippa Nuttall and Kathleen McLaughlin, Chief Sustainability Officer at Walmart, on an episode of the Sustainable Views podcast. In the episode, they delve into the pressing challenges of defining and managing Scope 3 emissions where Jeremy emphasized the need to prioritize direct decarbonization of value chains, while highlighting the importance of using all tools at our disposal for climate action, including high integrity carbon credits. “We’re firmly in territory where we need to combine driving decarbonization through (companies’ own) value chains with the fact we will have to do carbon removal at very large scale…we need to build an industry that is roughly the size of the oil and gas industry to do carbon removal over the next 25 years.” Click the link below to listen. #Scope3 #ValueChainEmissions #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CarbonRemoval #CarbonCredits
