It's one thing for the National Football League (NFL) to say its game is for everyone: It's another to prove it. The league and its creative partners at 72andSunny have spent roughly half a decade trying to make the sport more accessible and show where underrepresented audiences including younger fans, women, the Latinx community and international followers fit into the broader equation. In their latest campaign to kick off the 2024 season. the NFL and 72andSunny open the door a bit wider to bring parents, flag football players, wheelchair football players, women's collegiate players and Brazilian and Japanese players into the mix with NFL stars and staff. “Part of the helmets-off strategy is not only to showcase our players as human, but it’s also to make the league approachable and inclusive,” said Marissa Solis, the NFL’s svp of global brand and consumer marketing. “This campaign is amazing because everyone is a part of the game. No matter where you are, who you are, you see this spot, and you can see yourself somewhere in there.” ADWEEK spoke with NFL CMO Tim Ellis and 72andSunny creative directors Jason LaFlore and Matt Turnier about catering their marketing approach to the league's momentum and realizing that record viewership needs to be sustained with representation. “We’re grabbing things that are authentically happening in the sport, not just creating moments for the sake of a commercial,” LaFlore said. “We’re trying to infuse actual football culture into the ads that you’re seeing out there, so whether it’s women playing, people playing in Japan, or people playing all over the country, it’s all about just trying to show the inclusivity of football itself and how it reaches a little bit of everything.”
