About us
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a nonprofit, publicly supported charitable research and education organization dedicated to saving lives by preventing traffic crashes and reducing injuries when crashes occur. For 70 years, the Foundation has been true to its mission to prevent traffic deaths and injuries by conducting research into their causes and by educating the public about strategies to prevent crashes and reduce injuries when they do occur. Drawing on both in-house resources and the work of leading experts in North America, our work generates concrete recommendations for preventing crashes, injuries and deaths on our roads. Initially emphasizing projects related to safety patrols and driver education, today the Foundation has expanded its scope of work and has long been recognized as a leader in traffic safety, with a focus on four research priorities: • Driver behavior and performance • Emerging technologies • Roadway systems and drivers • Vulnerable road users Widely respected, the Foundation is routinely cited for its landmark studies. Research pertaining to distracted driving, traffic safety culture, teen and older driver studies, and drowsy driving have been featured nationally including on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Today Show, The New York Times and in USA Today.

VISION ZERO COURSE IN WASHINGTON DC Second day of the first ever U.S. Vision Zero Academy Course in #Washington, at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health! The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Vision Zero Academy are very happy to contribute to this course, which is built on the same pillars as the #VisionZeroInternationalCourse that is organised in Gothenburg in September each year. The U.S course is adapted to an American context and is carried out in collaboration with American partners such as Institute of Transportation Engineers; FIA Foundation; AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety as well as the World Health Organization. Beautiful facilities at the Johns Hopkins and interesting and inspiring exchanges between #American and #Swedish experts. Great to meet all of the engaged participants, coming from all over US, and beyond. We’ve already delved into a number of topics, such as the basics of the #VisionZero, the global context, equity, law enforcement, human injury tolerance, vehicle safety, governance and human factors, and more will follow the coming days. Went back to my AM radio roots in Iowa for this one ... Raising speed limits on highways could lead to more crashes on nearby roads, according to research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. This “Spillover Effect” creates unintended safety hazards for local communities that might not be involved in the decision-making process to raise the posted speed limit on a nearby highway. Today was a great day 2 of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Safe Mobility Conference. Attendees got to hear from leaders in road safety and experts in research, vehicle technology, and human behavioral factors. Presentations or panel discussions today included Leah Shahum Lorraine Martin Jessica Cicchino Ivan Cheung Carlos Braceras Nat Beuse Bryan Delaney Paul Jovanis NTSB member Thomas Chapman and more. The number of people and the high level interest in the conference is a testament to the vision and work of David Yang, Brian Tefft, Wesley Kumfer, and all of the FTS and UNC Highway Safety Research Center team. It was a a really impressive lineup of speakers and topics and I encourage all of you to keep an eye out for the (hopefully) 2025 edition of this conference.
