COMING SOON? Aalo Atomics is developing this advanced sodium-cooled reactor that draws inspiration from our MARVEL microreactor. The 30 MW thermal reactor will be optimized for mass manufacturing and use established commercial supply chains to help deliver clean, low-cost heat and power. The company recently signed a siting agreement with INL to build its first reactor at the lab for hydrogen production testing. We made a video! Aalo Atomics is a young company with a lot to prove, but we want to get in the habit of communicating what we’re doing, and why we’re doing it. In the next few months, we’ll start work on our full-scale physical prototype. We’re going to have to overcome a lot of engineering challenges, including the creation of our automated refueling hardware, heat exchangers, and more. Expect videos, tweets, and long-form posts about what we’re building, what problems we’re facing, and what solutions we’re testing to make the best nuclear systems we can. Today marks a major milestone in our journey at Aalo Atomics: We've just been granted a DOE-ID Siting MOU! This is the first step towards the deployment of an Aalo-1 reactor at the INL site. We’re aiming to start construction as soon as 2026. The next steps will include: ✅ Selecting a specific site ✅ Entering into a property agreement with DOE ✅ Performing environmental and cultural reviews ✅ Completing a non-nuclear full-scale test reactor ✅ Receiving regulatory permission to start construction We strongly believe the world needs more nuclear energy, and the reception of the DOE and INL to our proposed plans is incredibly encouraging. Yesterday we hosted our Conceptual Design Review. We’ve been working towards this for nearly 5 months! This was an 8 hour information session with NRC, DOE, and other key parties to walk through our complete conceptual design, and collect questions. Next, we’ll start work on building physical prototypes for testing, and iterate further on our design. More Aalo Atomics announcements coming soon… stay tuned!

Bringing over three decades of expertise in the nuclear industry, Amir is renowned for spearheading innovative initiatives that redefine the standards of nuclear regulation. His leadership in developing Risk-Informed/Performance-Based (RIPB) programs has been pivotal in setting new benchmarks for regulatory efficiency without compromising on safety. BIG Aalo Atomics NEWS today 🎉: Yasir Arafat is joining as our CTO! I honestly believe that Yasir will go down as one of the most influential people in nuclear. Why? Yasir was the project lead behind the MARVEL microreactor. This is a revival of a promising type of reactor that uses liquid-metal as the coolant, marking the dawn of a new era of innovation in nuclear. And recently, he & the team at INL made US Nuclear history: They received a “90% design complete” seal of approval from the DOE [1]. This is the first such approval since the DOE was formed in 1977. Aalo Atomics intends to commercialize a scaled up, more economical reactor, inspired by MARVEL. It too will use unpressurized liquid-metal coolant, and fuel that’s commonly used in university campus reactors. This unique combination will result in the same great level of safety as today’s water-based reactors, but will do so even more economically. Of the ~500+ people in the nuclear industry that I’ve met so far, I can think of nobody better to lead the technical efforts at Aalo, pushing to make nuclear ubiquitous, and showing the world how amazing this energy source really is. Prior to INL, Yasir led the eVinci microreactor project at Westinghouse, one of the other top advanced reactor programs globally. Yasir has a knack for making impossible-sounding projects a reality. Any final design changes during construction are what count as the last 10%. MARVEL had already been authorized to start procuring/constructing some parts as of this past summer, but design work was ongoing.
