For more than 50 years, Advocates for Children of New York has played an important and unique role in New York's public education community. We focus on the children and youth who are most likely to experience failure or discrimination in school because of poverty, race, disability, language barriers, homelessness, or involvement in the foster care or juvenile justice systems. No other city-wide organization works in the trenches, providing these vulnerable students and their families with the one-on-one guidance and advocacy they need, while at the same time, pressing for systemic reforms that benefit all students, even those who are most challenging to educate. Our efforts on the individual and policy levels inform and strengthen each other, increasing our effectiveness for the communities we serve.

Wow! What a month! After tabling at Brooklyn Pride, hosting a webinar, and throwing a fabulous Pride party at the office, my colleagues at Advocates for Children of New York and I closed Pride month right by tabling at Harlem Pride over the weekend. It was a privilege to spend time with these lovely humans sharing AFC’s resources for families of LGBTQ+ students. Education is everything 🏳️🌈🌈
Tomorrow marks the 42nd anniversary of Plyler v. Doe, a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that made it unconstitutional to exclude undocumented children from public school. Plyler continues to be vitally relevant today, even in our own city: no student should be – or legally can be – turned away because of their immigration status. Earlier this month at New York City Council's budget hearing, NYC Department of Education testified that up to 400 schools could lose a nurse when federal stimulus funds run out in June—impacting tens of thousands of students—as continued funding for this initiative was left out of Mayor Adams' budget.

Our latest #FairFuturesHero, Elisabeth "Lisa" Bernard, is a true advocate and ally of the Fair Futures community. Lisa, a Staff Attorney for the School Justice Project at Advocates for Children of New York, has provided critical support and training for staff who work with young people who are justice-impacted. Through workshops, individualized technical assistance, monthly consultation hours, and even in-person and direct support for young people, Lisa has shown her commitment to the educational success of our youth. By expanding the content knowledge of coaches and specialists through Advocates for Children’s Know Your Education Rights workshop series, she empowers Fair Futures staff and builds their capacity and understanding to support young people as they navigate the various educational systems in NYC.
