The NxN Edge Computing Module running on a COTS NVIDIA Jetson Orin (SOC) system-on-chip was tested against (SEEs) single-event effects using energetic protons. The system performed exceptionally well across a wide range of test parameters. Multiple non-destructive failures caused by single-event transients were prevented by the onboard radiation fault mitigation software that self-corrected single-event upsets and multi-bit upsets. The architecture incorporates radiation hardening by system design, complementing the robust software in mitigating single-event functional interrupts caused by single-event latch-ups. The onboard watchdog limited destructive single-event hard errors, burnout, and gate or dielectric rupture. The system's performance exceeded expectations with additional testing planned to further validate the radiation tolerance of the design. Aethero builds radiation-hardened computers to process data in orbit.
About us
Aethero builds radiation-hardened edge computers for space platforms ranging from CubeSats to space stations. Our products can be deployed individually, in pairs for a redundant configuration, or stacked as part of a larger computing cluster. Our goal is simple: let users compress their bandwidth needs, automate tasks like navigation, or manage satellites in a constellation by deploying and training ML applications like computer vision in space.

Very in-depth post about the Deimos satellite mission in orbit! It was a journey to build the NxN Edge Computing Module running on a COTS NVIDIA (SOC) system-on-chip, the first space-rated edge computer based on the Jetson Orin. Proud of what the Aethero team and its partners have achieved with the Deimos mission 🛰️ Learn more about the Deimos mission and the NxN Edge Computing Module here: https://lnkd.in/gk9HitGp

Two technological giants coming together on the forefront of technology 🛰️ Computational advancements have surged, with AI playing a pivotal role in various applications. On August 16th SpaceX’s Transporter 11 mission launched the "Fastest AI-powered Computer in space," the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX. AI in space is really fascinating, especially given my recent research work on spacecraft control systems at Space Dynamics and Flight Control Laboratory at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur I am genuinely curious on how AI will influence the development of control systems and technologies implemented in space? Another intriguing aspect of the mission involved Cosmic Shielding Corporation (CSC), a spin-out from Chalmers University of Technology. CSC developed a nanocomposite shielding metamaterial—a polymer interspersed with nanoparticles that effectively stops charged particles. This was the first time such shielding protected a real AI computer on a space mission. AI in space is paramount. Do share your insights so that we can take the discussion further 😉 PS: Congratulations on your mission success Aethero ❤️ Signing off, Aman 🚀

Don't blink, or you'll miss seeing this satellite deploy into space! 👀 Watch as the "Deimos" satellite from our San Francisco-based customer, Aethero, is successfully released into orbit using our revolutionary EXOpod Nova containerized deployer during the SpaceX Transporter-11 launch. Now in orbit, Deimos is pushing the boundaries of space computing with its groundbreaking processor, enabling over-the-air software updates and paving the way for the next generation of adaptive satellite technology. Here’s to Deimos and the exciting milestones ahead! 👏

The world's most compute-dense space hardware running on a COTS NVIDIA Jetson Orin (SOC) system-on-chip has completed (SEE) single-event effect proton testing at TRIUMF. Additional heavy ion radiation testing for SEEs will be performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory/NSRL (Nasa Space Radiation Laboratory) and HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba) - stay tuned for more information! It was an absolute pleasure working with Lembit Sihver at TRIUMF testing for (SEEs) single-event effects on the NxN Edge Computing System from Aethero as well as the effectiveness of the Plasteel Shielding from our partner Cosmic Shielding Corporation. Looking forward to working together again in the future to complete the largest radiation testing suite on COTS NVIDIA SOCs!
