Anchor QEA recently supported the County of Marin with maintenance dredging of Paradise Cay (County Service Area 29). Over the past year, our team successfully conducted sediment characterization, developed a dredge plan for a specified construction budget, and secured all necessary permits and regulatory approvals. Collaborating with WRA, Inc., we performed pre-construction eelgrass surveys and brainstormed turbidity curtain placement with Lind Marine. Dredging was completed mid-September, safely restoring navigation to Paradise Cay within budget and on schedule. Thanks to the County of Marin and all our project partners who helped us contribute to this important navigation project! #Dredging #EnvironmentalManagement #Collaboration

We’re thrilled to announce the publication of two draft Washington State Environment Policy Act (SEPA) Programmatic Environmental Impact Statements (PEISs), developed with our client, the Washington State Department of Ecology. These draft documents are open for public review and comment through October 28, 2024. These important documents will guide utility-scale solar and onshore wind energy development across the state through 2045, aligning with the Clean Energy Transformation Act’s goal to transition utilities in Washington to only non-emitting and renewable resources. Washington clean energy projects will tier SEPA analyses off the PEISs and lead to more streamlined and consistent environmental reviews in the future. Our team completed these comprehensive assessments through an approach that includes engaging with the public, stakeholders, and Tribes. We’re proud to contribute to a sustainable energy future for Washington. Are you going to the 2024 Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) Conference? While you’re there, join us on October 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. Anchor QEA environmental scientist Joey Lane and his research partners Bruce Cudkowicz and Karson Nicpon from Western Washington University will present their work on the recovery of Mills Reservoir in Olympic National Park. After two major dams were removed from the Elwha River in 2014, they studied how riverbank lupine (Lupinus rivularis) helps native plants grow in the area. Their research shows that lupine boosts the number and variety of native plants, pushing the ecosystem toward a more native-dominated community. We’re eager to learn more and connect with fellow attendees! #EcologicalRestoration #NativePlants #AnchorQEA

Anchor QEA is proud to support the 2024 Coastal Engineering and Nature-Based Solutions Short Course organized by Texas A&M University. Anchor QEA’s Ram Mohan co-directed the course with Dr. Jens Figlus. Three of our engineers attended the course this year—Jillian Zwierz, MS, EIT, Louisa Orr, PE and Rachel Acker—continuing our tradition of sending our young engineers to TAMU to support our national practice in sediment management, beneficial use, and nature-based solutions.
A big Thank You to all the folks who have made last week’s Texas A&M University short course on Coastal Engineering & Nature-Based Solutions a great success: my co-organizer Ram Mohan, our wonderful Ocean Engineering Department staff Esmeralda Tovar Yanez and Christina Irons, our engaging lecturers from TAMU OCEN, Dr. Panchang, Dr. Orencio Duran Vinent, from industry, Coraggio Maglio (DCCM), Dr. Ram Mohan, Renee Robertson (both Anchor QEA), Jim Naismith (T. Baker Smith), from Texas Sea Grant, Laura Picariello, and from USACE, Rob Thomas, Dr. Himangshu Das, Dr Burton Suedel, and Dr. Thomas Huff. Many thanks also to Casey Akin and Kamola Owens from our Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) Workforce Development Team for handling all the back office matters, to Dianna Ramirez and Andrew Murphy from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) La Porte Field Office for sharing their wealth of knowledge on our drag net catch with the participants during our boat trip, and of course the TAMU Ocean Engineering grad students and faculty for their help in making the Ice Breaker Poster Session, and the hands-on lab and instrument demonstrations such a success. Last but not least, thank you so much to all the participants for being so engaged and asking thoughtful questions throughout our four days together. Finally, thank you to my Department Head Dr. Sharath Girimaji for allowing me to offer this short course! Look out for the announcement for the next installment scheduled for September 2025 and sign up for your spot to join us on Galveston Island! Cheers, Jens #CoastalEngineeringNatureBasedSolutions #TAMU #OceanEngineering
