News of a second sinkhole opening in Godstone, UK indicates that groundwork issues like this are becoming more prevalent. Civil engineering and building failures can be the result of geotechnical issues, which may stem from errors or omissions at the different stages of the project, including ground investigation, design, and construction. It remains crucial to investigate the suitability of ground conditions prior to the design of any construction project. Ground investigations enable the necessary information to be gathered about the ground below the site to allow an economic active design to take place. Such investigations will often allow for a cheaper design and construction phase, identifying a hazard such as a sinkhole, which would cost many times the price of the ground investigation to put right after construction.
