Aramis CCS

Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain and Storage

The Aramis project aims to realise a transport infrastructure for large-scale CO2 reduction.

About us

Ambitious objectives require ambitious approaches. To meet the goals set by the Dutch Climate Agreement and the European Union’s Green Deal, it is essential to take great strides to reduce CO₂ emissions at scale to contribute to the energy transition. The Aramis project aims to contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions for hard-to-abate industries. It will do this by providing CO₂ transport to unlock storage capacity for the industry. The CO₂ will be stored in depleted offshore gas fields, deep under the North Sea. It will be based on an ‘open access’ philosophy so that other industrial customers and storage fields can be added incrementally to the system. The Aramis project, a cooperation between TotalEnergies, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) and Nederlandse Gasunie.

After the visit of several Members of Parliament at the beginning of September, we had the honor of welcoming two Members of the European Parliament last week. Jeannette Baljeu (NL) and Pascal Canfin (FRA), both members of the RENEW party in the European Parliament, visited Rotterdam to learn more about the Porthos and Aramis CCS project. During presentations and a tour along the Porthos route, the essential role these projects play in the sustainability of the Port of Rotterdam and achieving climate goals at both national and European levels was discussed. The support from Europe for CCS technology as a crucial means in the decarbonization of the industry is a strong incentive, and we look forward to future legislation in this area. As Jeannette Baljeu expressed in her LinkedIn post: ‘By permanently storing CO2, we prevent it from entering the atmosphere. This technology is urgently needed to achieve our Dutch and European climate goals. It is great to see how the Netherlands is taking a leading role in this!’ #decarbonization #Aramisproject #CCS #Porthos #Carbonstorage #climategoals #Europeanparliament

We are pleased to announce a new step forward in our shared commitment to build a solid CO2 infrastructure in the Netherlands.   The public consultation period (terinzagelegging) for the first draft permits of the Aramis initiative has taken place from 13 September to 24 October. During this period, the projects within the Aramis initiative organized two public consultation meetings, together with the Ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei. These meetings offered opportunities for the public to gain comprehensive insights into the initiative and the projects, while allowing interested parties to engage directly with representatives from both the Ministry and the Aramis initiative.   In the Aramis initiative, the Aramis project is working closely together with 5 other projects: CO2next (CO2 terminal), Porthos (compressor station) and the three storage projects of Shell, TotalEnergies and Eni. The scale of the Aramis initiative – with numerous permits and close regulatory oversight – highlights the importance of strong partnerships and transparent dialogue.   We thank all stakeholders, the Ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei, CO2next and everyone involved for their constructive collaboration and valuable input throughout this phase. A final decision on this first round of permit applications is expected during the first half of 2025. Yesterday the construction of Porthos was celebrated with those directly involved. The Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, the Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth, Sophie Hermans and Deputy Director-General from the European Commission for Energy, Mechthild Wörsdörfer opened the event together with the CEOs of Porthos’ shareholders Gasunie, EBN (Energie Beheer Nederland) and the Port of Rotterdam. Minister Hermans: “CCS is crucial to meet climate targets. By building the first large-scale transport and storage system for CO2 in the Netherlands, Porthos is taking a big step. This will allow the industry to reduce emissions and keep a competitive industry here in the Netherlands. I am proud of all the parties who are making this possible.” Foundation for future CCS-projects CO2 storage within the Porthos project can bridge the time needed for industry to switch from fossil fuels to low- or zero-carbon alternatives. The construction of the Porthos onshore open access pipeline marks the start of the development of a future CO2 network in Northwest Europe. While Porthos will transport 2.5 million tonnes per year, the onshore Porthos pipeline is ready for 10 million tonnes, so it can also supply CO2 to future projects like Aramis. The compressor station is also ready for expansion. It forms the heart of the future CO2 hub, to which also CO2next can be connected. This liquid CO2 terminal will be able to receive and deliver liquid CO2 by ship for customers not connected to a pipeline. #ccs #porthos #co2next
