Aramis CCS

Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain and Storage

The Aramis project aims to realise a transport infrastructure for large-scale CO2 reduction.

About us

Ambitious objectives require ambitious approaches. To meet the goals set by the Dutch Climate Agreement and the European Union’s Green Deal, it is essential to take great strides to reduce CO₂ emissions at scale to contribute to the energy transition. The Aramis project aims to contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions for hard-to-abate industries. It will do this by providing CO₂ transport to unlock storage capacity for the industry. The CO₂ will be stored in depleted offshore gas fields, deep under the North Sea. It will be based on an ‘open access’ philosophy so that other industrial customers and storage fields can be added incrementally to the system. The Aramis project, a cooperation between TotalEnergies, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) and Nederlandse Gasunie.

Yesterday the construction of Porthos was celebrated with those directly involved. The Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, the Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth, Sophie Hermans and Deputy Director-General from the European Commission for Energy, Mechthild Wörsdörfer opened the event together with the CEOs of Porthos’ shareholders Gasunie, EBN (Energie Beheer Nederland) and the Port of Rotterdam. Minister Hermans: “CCS is crucial to meet climate targets. By building the first large-scale transport and storage system for CO2 in the Netherlands, Porthos is taking a big step. This will allow the industry to reduce emissions and keep a competitive industry here in the Netherlands. I am proud of all the parties who are making this possible.” Foundation for future CCS-projects CO2 storage within the Porthos project can bridge the time needed for industry to switch from fossil fuels to low- or zero-carbon alternatives. The construction of the Porthos onshore open access pipeline marks the start of the development of a future CO2 network in Northwest Europe. While Porthos will transport 2.5 million tonnes per year, the onshore Porthos pipeline is ready for 10 million tonnes, so it can also supply CO2 to future projects like Aramis. The compressor station is also ready for expansion. It forms the heart of the future CO2 hub, to which also CO2next can be connected. This liquid CO2 terminal will be able to receive and deliver liquid CO2 by ship for customers not connected to a pipeline. #ccs #porthos #co2next

To meet the goals set by the Dutch Climate Agreement and the European Union’s Green Deal, it is essential to take great strides to reduce CO₂ emissions at scale to contribute to the energy transition. Capturing and storing CO₂ (Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)) underground can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. The Aramis project, a collaboration between TotalEnergies, Shell, EBN B.V. and Gasunie, aims to make a significant contribution to the energy transition through enabling the transport of CO₂ to depleted offshore gas fields under the North Sea. To explain what CO₂ capture, transport and storage entails and why it is important, our partner Gasunie had several short film clips made to explain CCS, the first of them is available now! #CCS #co2transport #carbonstorage

In collaboration with the North Sea Foundation, Wageningen University and others, Aramis has selected five nature-inclusive measures to make the offshore pipeline and platforms as nature friendly as possible. This is a great topic for the podcast "Zeebenen," which focuses on creating a sustainable future for the largest nature reserve and the fastest-changing part of the Netherlands, the North Sea. In the eighth and final episode of the podcast series, our colleague Tim Benard discussed how we engage with different stakeholders and apply Nature Inclusive Design to ensure that people, nature, and technology work together in the right balance. You can listen to the second podcast in the series that Aramis contributed to (Dutch only) here: #ccs #decarbonise #northsea #natureinclusivedesign

The ARAMIS CCS project welcomes funding from the European Commission for decarbonisation efforts. Last week, the European Commission has granted a subsidy of €124 million to the Aramis CCS project under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. This marks a crucial step forward in the development of an open-access CO2 transport infrastructure, emphasizing its importance for CCS infrastructure development in the Netherlands and its alignment with climate targets in Europe and the Netherlands for 2030. The Aramis CCS project, a collaboration between public and private partners, aims to create a large-scale CO2 storage system and reduce industrial CO2 emissions. This infrastructure will play a vital role in the energy transition by facilitating decarbonisation efforts within the European Union. Aramis will be able to connect the CO2 collection hub developed by the CO2next project, to the onshore CO2 collection pipeline and to the compression hub (developed by the Porthos project, also co-funded by CEF). #CCS #CEF #Energytransition

Aramis CCS project congratulates CO2next with an important milestone: the project entered the so-called Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase. CO2next will play a key role in the CO2 infrastructure and supply chain that is planned to be built in the coming years.   CO2next aims to build a liquid CO2 terminal at the Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam, that can be used by customers not connected to a CO2 pipeline to ship liquid CO2. Therefore, the terminal will be a critical piece of CO2 infrastructure which can be leveraged as part of the CCS chain. The technical feasibility and development of such CCS chain is jointly explored with the Aramis CCS project, to which the terminal is connected.    This marks another significant step towards the CCS facilities needed for European decarbonization, essential for achieving its climate targets.   We look forward to jointly grow and strengthen the CO2 infrastructure.   #CO2next #CCS #decarbonization
